Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

You're really not helpless

There is a lot of fear and dispair surrounding everything to do with Walmart now, and the ones going to be hardest hit will be the long term hourly employees (not 'associates'. We don't sit at the board meetings and this isn't a drug deal.) ..... But where ever you're at on the economic food chain, know that this isn't the end and that there are things you can do for yourself.

Vocational training. Maunual skills are in D I R E need for people right now. It's hard work but it doesn't require rocket science math----and it pays very decent.

CDL. Truck driving is growing increasingly needed and paying higher than evr before, due to the demand. Again, not that hard to get into.

Health care. There is almost always a need for help in every area in that field---licensed or on the job training.

Look first to a career guidance service in your area, look on line, research it out, all very easy things to do. Get up. Get help. There IS hope, and you're not helpless.

90 % driverless in ten years? I'll believe that when I see it. It was widely predicted that factory workers would all be replaced by robots.....back in the 70s

I agree except CDL. It will be 90% driverless in 10 years. 5 states already have driverless trucks on the road and as that proves safe it will rapidly expand. Same with the railroad maybe 20-30 years for the railroad as they are union and not considered contractors like most truckers. But PTC (positive train control) which is on about 60% of trackage has the engineer only blow the whistle at crossing and techincally the ptc in cab system can do that also. Again being union is saving the jobs but rail companies have been pushing for 1 man crews for years and with PTC it will be zero man crews.
