Thread regarding Cenovus Energy layoffs

Disrespect

The woman, who CBC News is not identifying because she's concerned speaking out could hurt her future job prospects, said an email went out on Feb. 1 outlining the dates some departments would be notified of cuts.

Staff from her department were told to be at their desks by 8 a.m. on Tuesday, and that they should expect to stay at their desks for most of the morning "to do what they need to, with regards to washroom breaks and quick trips to the kitchen."

"We just sat there and waited and when my supervisor came to the door, I knew," the former Cenovus employee said.

"It's a little bit demoralizing. It almost took any human dignity away. To me, I've worked by butt off for six years for the company and I felt that I wasn't really treated with a lot of respect."

They finally found a good balance between security and respect, I thought. Not walked out like criminals (1st round) or given unlimited network access for the day (2 rounds ago). I had time to send my goodbye email to everyone, say goodbye to those who called or emailed, stay long enough to pack my own office, but be gone before the end of the day. I have no complaints about the process.

Agreed about the snowflake comment - probably always got a medal for 'participation' and was never given a failing grade

This is not disrespectiful - this is a snowflake with hurt feelings looking for sympathy. Unfortunately layoffs are tough not matter how you deliver them. I was laid off also and felt I was treated respectfully.

But this is typical for any big company when they do layoffs. The don't want to have to search for people, wait for them to finish meetings or drag it out any longer than needed. I've been laid off before and it s---s but how else are they supposed to handle it?

This was communicated and this was how things played out:

Calgary – notification timing and process

I’m asking everyone to be at your desk by 8 a.m. – that’s when the reductions will start. Expect to stay in your office or workstation for most of the morning, but do what you need to do with regards to washroom breaks and quick trips to the nearest kitchen. For those individuals in an office, you can choose, if you’d prefer, to leave your door open or closed during the notifications.

Notifications will take place in each individual’s office. For staff in workstations, notifications will be initiated by a phone call – you’ll be asked to come to a meeting room where your leader, HRBP and outplacement support will provide more information.

Once the notifications are complete for each of your functions, your function head will send an email to let you know you can resume your day. Your leader will then book a meeting to discuss what’s happened and answer any questions.

Calgary – exit process

If you’re notified that you’ll be leaving the company you’re welcome to stay and collect your belongings that you can carry home that day. Your email and IT access will be cut off immediately, but your access card will remain active until 3 p.m. If you choose to stay a little while to say goodbye please be respectful that other teams may still be undergoing notifications.

You’re not required to pack anything in your office, however boxes will be available on each floor if you’d like to take some personal items home, otherwise personal belongings will be sent to your home address that we have on file within 10 to 12 business days."
