Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Has anyone faced harassment?

In the last few weeks one full time and 3 part time employees in my dept have been let go. This leaves me as the only remaining part time employee. For the last week my mgr (who never talks to me) has called me at home and stops by the department to remind me that if I stay I will have to work every weekend, be forced to pick up extra shifts, etc. I feel she is trying to intimidate me so that I will quit and she can save one of the other PT staff members. I've started documenting conversations. I'm not sure I will be safe from this harassment after the others sign their severance papers. I'm curious if others have experienced this type of intimidation.

Lol its a retail job. There are retails jobs all over, wow your manager must live in a bubble. Tell her go scratch. Start looking else where. Lucky to have a job what a joke. Big talent you need to ring a register and smile.

Use your unavailable days every month. They are yours.

You do not have to open your availability for weekdays/weeknights you would like to have off, but if you have a lot of restrictions through the week it WILL push you to work more weekends so you get scheduled for your minimum hours for your job type.

You should work six days a week during GWP. That’s when you make your money and get more hours in, all of which helps pad those weeks where you are complaining you didn’t get enough hours. Plus it helps the counter make their plan which help you keep your job in the first place!

Yes you need to open credit. Yes she gets Macy’s money when you do, but so do you- cash spots on your game card, too....she doesn’t get any cash And you get a lot more MM than she does. She has to split it with all the other managers and it’s really not that much compared to what you get for doing this part of your job.

Have I left anything out? By all means, open a SIS case and put in a complaint now.

I work in cosmetics for 20+ years. There were approx 10 people that were terminated in January. Our department manager is a BIG BULLY!!!!!! She doesn’t want anyone using unavailable days. She also tells us to open our availability. When it’s free gift at our counter she wants everyone to work six days. She tells us that we’re lucky to have jobs and that people would give their right arm to have a job. Everyone is afraid to speak up. Also she only wants one person off a day making it difficult for anyone else to get off. And, let’s not even get into the daily harassment of opening credit. She thinks we’re all stupid. We know she gets Macy money when she makes HER credit goal. Definitely will be calling solutions in-store.

@RHvvNXk-3ret If you're getting no response, it's time to send a letter, detailing your complaint & no-response from your InStore Investigator and stating that you will be consulting a labor relations lawyer. Check online for pro-bono legal clinics in your area, they could give you decent advice and even draft a letter for you if you decide to pursue it. Sorry for your predicament, unfortunately, there are still a few educated and uneducated executives and associates who discriminate & harass. The sad part is, everyone fills out & sign online forms completing video training on discrimination & harassment. I have my own tales to tell, but I already left the company and this is not about me, it's about you. Be strong.

I was harrassed by a member of the district team years ago and went to corporate hr. I was pulled out of my district job and put back in a single store and he was left in his nice cushy job. They even gave him an annual award. I had proof of the harrassment. Witnesses, text messages, notes in his handwriting. Nothing happened to him. Years later they make him my boss. I go to hr and nothing. The harrassment starts back up. Im passed up for numerous promotions and blacklisted because he's one of the boys club. Now im out of a job, laid off and i open a solutions instore claim. Nothing is happening with it. My investigstor who said she would touch base with me every few days doesnt answer my texts and i havent heard from her in 2 weeks. Macys practices retaliation. You are a trouble maker if you use the open door or solutions. The boys protect the boys.

I’m on the administration side of things and the Company has decided to add more FT positions, which is a double edge sword. Bad for anyone who is only able to work PT and good in a sense of having employees who are more seasoned and committed (meaning working 5 days a week). All this based on seniority- who stays and who goes. The company has allocated a specific amount of ownership per area and if the store is staffed more than the Spring 2018 target, those will be displaced into other areas of the store. Example, target 4 FT and 2 PT but current ownership is 3 FT and 3 PT, 1 PT will be displaced and add a FT. That PT who is considered an overage will be moved to another area of the store- with no say.

If you are in a situation that you feel you are being pushed out for any other reason but seniority, I would partner with In-Store solutions. Documenting is the correct step, but be sure you are confident in your reasoning. The Team who does internal investigations will get a solution- these are the people who protect lawsuits from the company. So they will get to the bottom of it. I’ve seen it play out very fairly in several cases.

Harassment is alive and well at Macy’s. It’s going on in my store big time and has for years. Management is heavily involved in it and they are using customers and other local people to try to get us fired as well in order to save their friends jobs. Please Macy’s employees begin posting your experiences.

team player or not, do you realize that the SLACK is gone? When the people being cut are gone, SO ARE THOSE HOURS !! Unless your store is adding hours above their plan, which they are NOT supposed to do, there WILL BE NO HOURS to work!!!! Come on folks, this is not rocket science!! Areas having one to open and one to close, there's no SLACK for you to pick up!!!! Work you shifts, take your unavailable days, work the key days over and above if not scheduled and there's a shift, and let it be. Do not take pressure from anyone telling you that you have to work every weekend. If you want to pick up someone's shift, go for it. But you DON'T HAVE TO pick up more shifts !!!! You have EVERY right to use UAD and PTO on the weekends as long as it is not a key day. If you work at least two weekends out of four every month, you are holding up your part of the deal.

I use my unavailable days to get one Friday/Saturday off every 6 weeks or so. Just so i can plan a weekend activity with my family. If by chance i get an additional Friday or Saturday off behind that, i often grab additional shifts because i want to be there during key dates to maximize credit and sales performance.

I get a kick out of it because we have associates on my team who give away all their Friday and weekend shifts as well as closing shifts by swapping out and advertising. But when i plan my 1 unavailable weekend ever 6 weeks, my mgr is freaking out and asking why. Uh, hello! I’m entitled to one every few weeks. I pick up everyone else’s if i do get anymore then that off. So, I’m picking up their slack without being asked to. But nothing is said to them, and when something is said to them, nothing changes.

I feel we laid off allot of decent people this last round and we kept allot of people who feel entitled to soft schedules simply because they’ve been around since the Filene’s days.

Keep in mind I’m still working 43-46 hrs a week every time i pick that extra shift. No one has a problem with it though because i constantly work on projects during downtime and they’d rather me there than someone who just stands behind the register on their cell phone!

It is really quite simple. With less sales people, you will be required to pick up the slack. It shouldn’t be a foreign concept that a retail selling associate needs to work weekends. The problem is when more tenured associates abuse the system so they only work one weekend a month. That is not helping your store out at all. So yes I completely understand your manager constantly reminding you to pick up shifts. When I was a sales manager almost every single one of my associates used unavailable days and PTO on the weekends. It’s not harassment when they are just reminding you that you applied for a job where you may be required to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays. If you can’t handle that then this isn’t the job for you. At a time when our sales staff is reduced by almost half, EVERYONE needs to be a team player.

make sure you use your unavailable days to get at least one weekend off a month and if you are not scheduled the other weekends they cannot make you pick up shifts unless it's a key day. If you are added to the schedule after it is released and you didn't agree to it, you yell loud and clear that you did not agree to the schedule change and they cannot make you be responsible for that day (again, unless it's a key day). Don't let them push you around.

Yes I have. I am the only part timer left in my department and have been told the same thing! They are trying to push us out! No not quit! That is what they want you to do. We need to start a movement. I wish a labor attorney would go on this site. The harassment at Macys is disgusting.Just hang in there they will all be all gone eventually.

no one can make you work every weekend or pick up more shifts that you can’t really do as long as you are working your minimum hours, except you have to work key days Plus when these people all go away their shifts go away too. Document it all then got up the line if this really becomes harassment.
