Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Depressing work enviroment

Anybody noticed how depressing working at Qualcomm has become? We never discuss anything positive at the office. It's always buyouts, voting arguments, layoffs, suits, losing clients... When was the last truly positive thing that happened to this company?

The way we are going, everybody here will be on Xanax within a year just to be able to make it through work days.

I am doing my best to stay positive. We don’t know what will happen. Who knows maybe being acquired will be a good thing. All I know is that God has not let me down yet so I’m not going to fret.

Hang in there. Replace your fear with faith. Faith that everything will work out for the bests.

When I got my job at Qualcomm, I thought it was a great company working on interesting things. In few years I realized that Qualcomm is just an average company. I say this because I felt like our quality of engineers is bad. I never seen a company which has so mediocre engineers and useless mgmt. I can definitely tell our 2015 SRP failed because it was never properly executed. I personally know people who don't know how to code or even understand basic OS concepts survived but stellar engineers were sent off. If these things happen how does work gets done. I left my job in 2016 and then realized how companies work. In my current company we went through layoffs but it was not like qualcomm. The layoffs affected mostly managers and areas that were not profitable.

This situation with Qualcomm is depressing, but the direction will be known soon. If Broadcom succeeds there will be some large layoffs in 2018. We are a little like children caught in a custody battle...for which parent are we cheering? Maybe we start hating them both? It's sad that such a great company has been reduced to this. If you can't make it a year on savings I would consider other cities. Try to stay positive about your own life, even if it is impossible to feel good about Qualcomm. This will work out in the end.

Emergency plan? What is the emergency plan when several thousand layed off engineers flood the SD job market?

If you feel that your job is safe even through acquisitions and savings programs, then stay at Q. If you feel you might be let go, then leave NOW. But the idea of an „emergency plan“ is utter bullcrap.

Now is the time more than ever to be positive by realistic. This is not the time of panic as this make situation much worse.

Be prepared and have emergency plan in place until situations calm

It's not worth to get depressed in this environment. Life and family are far more important than work ( specially when the company care less about us ). There are plenty of opportunities out there. Update your LinkedIn and turn on notification to recruiters you are willing to consider options. Then you will see there are more than just qc. It's not worth it to get depresse and lose health about this. There are many things are beyond our control. Focus on yourself . Good luck !

The culture at Q has been in a downward spiral for the last ten years at least. The collaborative innovative atmosphere is gone. The best people I used to work with are gone already. My own laziness to get out of my comfort zone has kept me attached to Q though. Perhaps getting layed off would actually be a good thing for me.

I think the proactive management move at this point would be to lock the WT 11th floor balcony.
