Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Interviewing for a sales role at Watson Health....is it safer there?

I have a great track record, but, I am seeing way too many peers getting blown up. I am hoping I can get at least another couple of years before the same starts over there.

Fortunately I left iBM for greener pastures. As a Sales Executive, I worked with some great people and ... I worked for some horrible managers. During my five year IBM tenure I reported to 12 different managers. Please note, if you take this position I guarantee you will encounter a similar fate. From a sales perspective here's the rub; I left IBM for another sales role BECAUSE many of the accounts I was assigned to basically told me they were systematically weening themselves off of ANYTHING IBM. It's almost impossible to sell a particular software product suite IF the Customer or Prospect does not have faith in the company you work for AND their ability to staff sufficient R&D and Support for the software you're trying to sell. It's hard enough to sell let alone having to defend IBM's drastic cost cutting and morale issues. Good luck to you. My advice is find another opportunity.

Thanks. I guess it is time to look outside IBM because my current situation won't hold for very much longer.

I'd go for it ONLY if you have an insider insight into what's going on within the group - there are so many groups and subgroups, pockets of influence and subtle and invisible relationships. It's almost a given that there will be continuous cuts going forward, so unless you know what you are getting yourself into (insider info) you will be in an inherently weak position.

Now, if your horizon is 2 years only - that's a different story - you may have a higher lever of tolerance and I'd say go roll the f---ing dice (welcome to the cut-throat capital of the world)...

All the best and good luck!

Can confirm, was RA'd in 2016 using this method:

Take it from someone with 30 years experience in IBM - it's really dangerous to switch departments as you'll be first out on the next RA list

Watson has been getting hit in all these layoffs. People are realizing Watson isn't all it is being sold as. I know quite a few that are leaving that team.

Watson Health has been laying off. Don't waste your precious career time. IBM is extremely hostile to employees at this point. Maybe if there's a new regime at some point, but it's a sinking ship with incredibly bad morale right now.

Take it from someone with 30 years experience in IBM - it's really dangerous to switch departments as you'll be first out on the next RA list. Departments can be "clicky" and as the new boy/girl, you'll be singled out as an easy target rather than upset the "core team". Better to stay put and be top of your existing team.

My experience and entirely your choice as only you know how bad things are where you currently stand.
