Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

How many of you are trying to volunteer for the lay-off

I don’t think there was any data presented on what percentage of those laid-off in 2015 actually wanted to be laid-off to walk with a package, but I knew of several who did just that. Come on, admit it, who here WANTS to be laid-off? I’ll start with myself. Yep, I’d like to be selected. Not sure if I should approach my manger about it or not though.

Talking around the office I would guess there are hundreds, maybe even a thousand who would gladly walk out tomorrow and not come back.

The old 'work life balance' and lack of productive, interesting work seem to be the main reasons people leave.

Myself : if I get laid off I will gladly hop and jump to the door. Toxic environment in the office now. Call in the EPA and declare it a superfund site.

I would volunteer for the BRCM Change-in-Control package (i.e. all RSUs vest).

Count me in as one who is hoping for a severance package. I am ready to retire, am past my SS FRA age, but accrue 8% more SS benefits for every year I opt not to take my SS benefits past my FRA. I actually enjoy what I do at QC, and I feel that I truly add value to my team, but work has been too slow lately to keep me fully engaged. I feel that QC owes me a severance package for the effort I have put in over the past 18 years with QC. I would gladly sign a waver for a severance package equal to what has recently been handed out to my contemporaries, but am unwilling to leave for the convenience of QC without such compensation, and would not sign any waver without an equivilent compensation package. So I am in sort of a “Catch 22” limbo where I am waiting for the next shoe to drop and see what the offer may be...

Therapist: „So, Mr. Q, what is your problem?“

Mr. Q: „I hate my job! Toxic environment! Backstab culture! Dead-end with no career perspective! Ultra-long hours! Deadwood getting paid more than me! No appreciation of my work! Ugly feuds with customers! No job safety at all! I am so depressed, I am in a bad mood every day, and it is affecting my private life in a major way already!“

Therapist: „But Mr. Q, the job market is great right now. Why don‘t you just... quit?“

Mr. Q: „But I didn‘t get a package, and I can‘t just leave without a package! Boooohooooo!“

That about sums it up.

I wonder actually if severance packages are a paychological instrument to keep people from leaving. Low performers get laid off with packages, so now the mid and high performers can‘t just leave without a package, because it would mean that they would be missing out compared to the low performers. Envy is a very strong behavioral driver.

I guess what people don‘t realize is: If you leave, you won‘t get a severance package. If you stay, you might not get one either.

HR wont help. I wonder what HR does anyways.

Take it up with your management chain, one at a time.

I really love to work at a company where people hate it but stay only because they ddn‘t get paid to leave.

It means you’re dealing with a double load of feces: Sh--ty company and sh--ty colleagues.

Leave HR out of this, and if your manager does not give you a satisfactory answer, take it up with his supervisor.

HR does not make these decisions, they only assist those who do.

I talked with my manager and my HR representative. No response yet, the cuts have not been decided in my group.

I like to volunteer for layoff because of negative work environment. I want to ensure I get the severance package. No trust in management. so have to talk to HR. Don’t know how to start the conversation.
