Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Poll for Wallmart Associates in Bentonville.

If you're a Walmart Associate in Bentonville or NWA, are you worried you personally could get laid off in the planned reductions by Jan 31st? What Building do you work in? What functional area do you work in? How many associates in your department? What is your manager or director saying?

I think the person was saying ISD was told in January that layoffs were done & then yes did later happen in April. It was after the post that someone said about GPC layoffs being done in 2015 .

@ReGQMBU-2fzo

There were layoffs in April 2017. So much for your January statement.

But if you want to believe WM management then go for it.

BTW... I have a bridge I am looking to sell...

True but how would you know in advance if you are going to a high performing team ?

The comment about the company being like a machine is so true.

I agree calibration is super subjective. It all comes down to if your boss likes you and if they’ll fight for you.

Also a word to the wise. If you are a high performer, think twice before you go to a high performing team. In this new system, someone on that good team has to be the bottom rank. Don’t join a high performing team just to get cut.

In GPC we were told by our prior leadership back in October 2015 that layoffs for our group were over, it's been fairly true. A few were laid off since then, but it didn't hurt them! They had degrees and were from the outside anyway, and got other jobs easily.

We got lots of long term associates and people with no college degree. How is someone with no degree and no experience other than Walmart supposed to get a new high paying job after 20+ years? Especially since so many are from Arkansas and want to stay. if it's coming, just hoping they lay people off who have a better chance of getting another job.

who in their right mind would want to work in this kind of review system ? If you make one or even two mistakes, miss a deadline or even get the wrong side of your manager you be on the bottom 10%. It is like working in silos. It sure isn't a team environment. I agree with rewarding people who do exceptionally well.

If your name is on a list, there is no way to get it off the list. If it’s not on the list, there’s no way to get on the list even if you want. Bottom line: Always be searching for a new role. Having been impacted before, the individuals that believe their company is their family are the ones that take it the hardest. Your company is just that: a company. If you’re impacted you’ll quickly find that your company and “work friends” become more and more distant. That’s just the reality. Pick yourself up, take the severance, and move on. You will be happier knowing you have taken control of your life. And please, don’t get on social media and thank the company for all the years of employment, blah, blah, blah. It looks ridiculous. You earned that check for all those years, the company gave you nothing you didn’t earn. The severance isn’t because a company cares, it’s because you sign away your rights to future legal action. Walmart is not a terrible company, but it is a machine and a machine has no feelings. Again, that’s the reality. There is life at Walmart and there is life after Walmart. Godspeed to everyone if these cuts do occur.

GPC. Hasn't been touched for a few years. we know it's coming sooner or later. Lots of people worried about the new review system but everyone is sitting tight wondering who will get PIP this time. I came to the company as a temp and only expected to work a short time to pay off some debt. Hopefully, I'll stay long enough to get a full year bonus.

The whole process is BS. Calibration happens before Self Evals are due. You have to hope your manager speaks up for you in calibration, otherwise the other managers will judge you and give feedback based on what they have seen in the hallway. So wether we have a job or not is in the hands of perceptions of others that have no insight as to your actual performance.

"The best thing anyone can do is stay relevant, keep up with the changing environment, and deliver or exceed your objectives and do it better than anyone else"

That doesn't matter (for this round anyways). Clearly they already know who is being cut, just need to notify the people.

I am personally no longer with Walmart but check this board periodically out of fear for my WM friends. I was laid off last year and I can tell you that even if you think you have the most necessary-to-the-survival-of-the-company job, you're still not safe. What's more: it's up to your manager's discretion if they want to try to find another position to transition you into prior to your displacement meeting. In that instance, even if you have a great personal AND professional relationship with your manager, get Exceeds Expectations in your evals, and have a stack of accolades from other management and associates you've supported.... at the end of the day, if the manager just doesn't want to be bothered with trying to help you out, he/she doesn't have to. They can just show you the door. My advice to everyone is to accept the possibility that you could be next and go ahead and start processing that, to save your emotions from getting the best of you in the situation. If you don't get impacted, great-- keep up the good work and have a great day. If you do get impacted, then you've already taken the first step in trying to wrap your mind around it and maybe already have a game plan in place. Most importantly, remember that this isn't personal. If it were, you'd be fired-- not laid off with job-search time and a severance package.

Best of luck to all of my former WM family. I miss you all every day and wish the best to you. If your time is up in the next week or two, trust me when I say that there IS life after Walmart and you WILL be ok.

There is absolutely no one who isn’t worried. It doesn’t matter your function, job level, ethnicity, gender, age, tenure...everyone is anxious and uncomfortable. From the most entry level hourly associates to the executives. You’re fooling yourself if you think the execs know what is going on or who is next.

The best thing anyone can do is stay relevant, keep up with the changing environment, and deliver or exceed your objectives and do it better than anyone else.

I know that’s not what people want to hear. I’m not any more comfortable than anyone else. But it’s the reality of the environment. Particularly retail.

Yes of course I'm worried.

I'm in DGTC (ISD).

I work in Support/Operations.

My manager is an absolute brown-nosing a$$hole who would suk anyone higher level than him, so, no one listens to him anyway, Even if he did say something, I'm sure it would be a lie.

It doesn't really matter what management says. They have said no layoffs before & then soon after they come.
