Years to become senior staff at Intel?

I believe grade 9 is considered senior staff. Assuming you are good, what is the average time to get there from being a new hire G5?

If you consider that only 10-15% of your entire group gets a promo at focal, and in order to be in that percentage you need an outstanding or EE review...it takes a long long time to move up one or two grades, not to mention 5. It's a competition...you MUST be the BEST in your group each year to advance a maximum of one grade level for ever 2 years. You will NOT get a promo 2 years in a row. To specifically answer your question...if you are the absolute best person in your group, it will take at least 10- 15 years to get to a grade 09.

I know an outside experience hired Director at Intel - that went from being a Director to becoming SSG VP in 5 years.

Any kind of career planning at Intel is based more on happenstance and luck than anything else. Do you have a good manager? One that is connected to leadership that can provide access to resources and recognition? Will you be eliminated as part of a re-org or re-structuring? Are you at a main campus?

I made it from 6 to 9 in 11 years. If you kiss a lot of butt while delivering results you can do it faster (I wasn't a butt kisser). Good luck.

I know someone who made it from a 5/6 to a 10 in about 10 years. But it's not just skill - it's also luck. The right manager support, the right projects at the right time, etc.

Realistically, only a very small minority if people will make it from G5 to G9. I don't know which site you're at, but at F32, site manager permission is now required to promo someone to G8. If you're very lucky it should take about 3 yrs to get from G5 to 6, 3yrs from 6 to 7, 5 yrs from 7 to 8, and 5 to 10 yrs from 8 to 9. So 16 to 21 years, but this is if you're a stellar employee and well connected. The vast majority of people never make it past G7.
