Forcing people into the elbows for performance reviews

Top grading is back even though GE admitted it was a mistake and not helpful and was a negative overall

Well we got the mandate to pick more people for the elbow for ratings or they would tell us who to move even through they don't know the people. Doesn't matter who just come up with more 3, 6, 7, 8, 9s

Glad in town halls they continue to report they don't force the ratings to fit the curve

1vxi -- No, the elbow game has been going on for ten years. I left five years ago after 29 years at this horrible company. I laid myself off and called it retirement, at age 62. My emotional health was more important than a few more months and I was a marked man anyway. Get out while you can, especially if your hair is grey.

2dmu. - You are right on. I have pushed back as best I can but my pay raises have been near zero for years so until I find a new job I am stuck. However I do everything I can to help my team if they are looking outside and impacted. And I have officially updated my online profile and the search begins. I hope to leave by late April before they assign all the RIFd employees work to me

1nzd - I was one of those managers. it's not a subtle threat....its a clear and unmistakable threat. You play the game or you go on the list too. Its that simple. Unfortunately, People have bills to pay etc....

The “good” managers who push back are being subtly threatened so some have been leaving and others are looking.

The elbow game has been going on for about 5 years. It is not fair. I know people who were affected. I know people who left Hon and are much happier and make more $. I know people who retired and are very happy, some wondering why they stayed so long. The HR people will likely end up getting laid off too or quiting. It never hurts to look. Make sure you sell high and buy low.

My female manager in PSE PHX. kept telling me she was leadership had zero backbone or scruples. She’s still there and I’m not so I guess Honeyhell got what they wanted.

Not really cause I’m retired and drawing pension and living life after 35 years at Honeyhell.

OP- who are “they”? (we got the mandate to pick more people for the elbow for ratings or THEY would tell us who to move even through THEY don't know the people)

And I assume you are a manager.

Are there no management people who have the integrity to stand up and do what’s right? How can you look yourselves in the mirror? Omg. You think a post warning everyone makes you a better person? No. If you follow this mandate you s--- as much as the rest.

Yeah I was one with 30+ stellar years career here. Always ranked at the top of my teams. Well thought of and never an issue. Until in 2015 in a reorganization I got a manager that was unbelievably bad. (I wish we could name names here)

I got very unexpectedly put on PIP- for LIES that I had proof of. HR told me they didn’t care that I could prove them wrong, if my manager wanted me on PIP that’s ALL that mattered. Unbelievable! But I should not have been surprised- I’ve seen it happen to so many awesome employees.

I will tell you this. NO ONE is safe. And the older you are and higher in pay, your risk goes way up.

And yes I survived PIP and I’m still here. I’m in the 59-60 age group so not so easy to find another job. I am looking always tho.

I love my job. That the saddest thing! I love my job.

I expect a RIF any week for me. Still have the same s---y boss.

Yeah I know a guy with 35 + years wrote up for not picking up a job function that the previous guy left and was never replaced. He was put on a PIP due to customer complaints do he was told. He quit a week later, retired but who cares what you call it. Railroaded is a better term. He left with no notice......

Screw Honeyhell.

How about reporting forcing people into the elbow to the ethics committe. It's unethical behaviour when you are forcing people into the outer elbow even if they met or exceeded their goals and targets.

We were told to make the distribution or the managers would be impacted. There was a suggestion from HR no less to put someone on leave from their earned upper box to 6 because by the time they got back it wouldn't matter.

Keep your living expenses low and Honeywell can never hurt you. If you bought a house l, a vacation property, 2 new cars, and a boat then Honeywell has you right where it wants you.

I wonder if all VPs must be in the elbow since overall performance missed targets clearly it starts at the top!!

yup agree....a few weeks back it was "everyone is a 5"...now its put X % in the elbow whether they deserve it or not or leadership will regardless if they know the person or what they do. They will randomly select people off of a list.

makes perfect sense.

I wonder if its only US and europe only or other "sh--hole" countries like India that have no real talent or skillsets but are cheap?

Honeywell is definitely doubling down on "rank and yank" despite multiple studies showing it is an ineffective way to get real productivity out of people.
