LE never wanted to run a big company, doesn’t know how, so whatever happens, happens. The execs he’s hired have mostely not worked out, this is just more of the same. Sinking ship!

LE is by now an old dude, he never understood enterprise apps and never much cared about customers , always bet on being a monopolist and charging monopoly prices. so he may care about preserving his fortune but has no clue what to do to actually accomplish this end. Then again, he has enough money so even when the stock goes down, he’ll still be ok, so maybe he doesn’t care all that much after all. He’s certainly not doing anything to point the company on the right direction, which would start with hiring good execs. Too old, too tired, has too much money, he doesn’t give a damn!

Don't see how LE wouldn't care. The bulk of his fortune is still tied to Oracle stock. If ORCL goes down in flames, so does he.

@Rgm1ZdM-5whl : same here, was laid off back in oct17, now happily working for a major customer as IT Architect, only using Oracle when absolutely necessary (i.e. only DB, and only when it is too expensive to move to Postgresql). My management also asked for my opinion on Oracle cloud, I replied: "Oracle has a Cloud? New to me, never heard of this" :-)

I'm one of the ones laid off in APAC and I am already disendorsing Oracle at every chance I get. I know others that have been laid off are doing the same thing. Also I go to some of the cloud and big data meetups in my region and all attendees have a very poor opinion of or are angry at and want a big piece out of Oracle.

Unless Oracle changes its attitude with its customers and stops this offshoring drive to low cost countries it will be going down the sewer. At the very least its apac business will become non-existent. The sharks in apac are circling round oracle.

Actually, most of the stuff stocked in the coolers these days is sugar free, either aspartame. stevia (the SoBe drinks) or no sweetener at all (the iced teas)

I never understood the free drinks thing. Ok coffee is typical. The cooler filled with free sugary sodas and juices seems like a liability on your health insurance rates. Maybe the gym cancels that out.

When the toilet paper goes to single ply, that's when you know it's all over with.

I got this from a friend who worked in another company for many years. This was literally what happened. Before layoffs occurred the toilet paper was changed to single ply, indication of cost-cutting into effect. Then layoffs would occur shortly afterwards.

Don't be fooled by 'THE TRAVEL FREEZE'. Your @ss hole VP and/or direct managers will find ways around it. They always do. My former manager would travel from the East coast to HQ like it was a f..ing shuttle bus. He would fly out for a one hour meeting and turn back around later that evening. I'm sure it was all about getting his flight status and using the points to take his kiddies on summer vacation and reading his book on the airplane. One time, he did this twice in a week. It was a business emergency....right.

Actually, I got bold and asked him how he could travel during the 'FREEZE'. He said he got approval from the SVP. BS.

I have seen SC pull this trick over the past 12 years....she wants to get margins to 80%. Also, the 'travel freeze' seems to be implemented before makes a huge acquisition (i.e Sun, Peoplesoft).

It’s an idiotic short term focus strategy that will land oracle exactly where MH landed his last gig HP, in the scrap heap of former great companies. You did this to yourself LE - you saw how MH run HP into the ground and then you hired him. Not very smart.

MH very strongly believes in reigning in costs. It's his MO and how he has always operated.

The immediate focus is on lowering the cost of sale to increase margins. They cut out most travel and allow lower cost employees to try and sell the software versus having an older and expensive sales team.

The reality is this is a very risky move. I know MH thinks he can pull it off and I will be shocked if he's able to. What will be left is a company in decline that is despised by many former employees who were riffed and customers who were audited and forced into cloud contracts.

Just look a where HP is today. Oracle will be in much worse shape when the dust finally settles.

Two gleaming, glowing, glaring problems at oracle driven by the top leader:

  1. No marketing program to assist customers on learning about oracles many products which results in a need for extensive field sales to educate customer to build demand. Oracle seriously has no marketing staff or agencies or decent advertising or compelling web content as product info. It’s just ugly & cheap and repetitive And their brand? Nonexistent other than the logo.

  2. Elimination of field sales will further exacerbate the pipeline for new sales revenue as there is no marketing, and now a shrinking to zero ground game.

The kiddos don’t know the products and There is no marketing for customers to self educate ... it’s a dicey looking forecast for the big red blob with the funky font to spell their name out in all caps (their brand).

Leadership (3 top execs) made all these choices and decisions above. And one of them just sold 80% of her stock.

Hmmmm.

MH has been very clear for year by now that he believes that customers decide what to buy on their own by looking in the web and that sales reps therefore actually don’t add any value. He is wrong because he had no clue how large corporations be buy software, but there you have it. An ignorant fool who’s never sold any software driving the train off the cliff. Bye, bye experienced field sales reps, hello class of kids in the hub in Austin. And bye, bye oracle as a major software company.

Agreed, only someone with a grudge would say that. Oracle has issues, but I would rather read some good analysis on those issues. The one that concerns me the most are the layoffs in sales. That does seem rather strange and troubling.

Cost cutting is for two things. The first is to ground the field sales team. The second is to prep for the March 1st HW sales Layoffs. No sense in having travel expenses in addition to a 475 million sunk cost for severance packages.

Additionally with the new OD campuses coming online facilities will be moved about and many buildings shut down. All customer contact will come from the OD campuses. Spending yes even on office supplies are at offices other than OD are also a waste.
