Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Give notice when going to competitor?

So looks like I’ve landed a gig with a cloud competitor to one of oracle’s offerings. Do I give notice with standard two weeks or is it safe to assume that when I give notice it will be my last day. My manager is a good person and I don’t want to thumb my nose at anyone but I also don’t want to go potentially two weeks without pay. For my personal situation I feel I should mention I’m leaving for a competitor because it will become obvious shortly after anyway.

What countries do you guys work in?

Employers cannot just fire you immediately without cause on the day you gave notice just because you gave notice. Give your notice and either work out your notice period or they will ask you not to come in and still pay you.

They usually only ask you to finish immediately without pay if they think you are going to sabotage stuff.

Lie - tell them you are not going to a competitor. You could get two weeks where you essentially get to do nothing but get paid Otherwise, you could get walked to the door immediately.

I left Oracle a few months ago for another job. I gave notice and I was not walked out the door. I don't think your boss would walk you out the same day, if he is a decent person, he will not do that to you.

I don't care where you are going, don't hurt your reputation by not giving notice. It is a total d--k move. Sure, be prepared to be walked out the same day, it might happen. But either way, be professional about it. Especially if you have a good relationship with your manager, don't stab him / her in the back on your way out if you can help it.

Whether you are walked out the same day or are allowed to work through your notice period depends on your boss and his management. It used to be standard that the day one game notice of leaving for a competitor want the last day, but that has changed.

One thing to note is that Oracle will terminate all benefits on 11:59PM of the last day. That differs from many other companies where benefits extended to the end of the month (because they pay the premium monthly). It is just one more way that Oracle shows what kind of company they really are.

Resignation letter? It’s a self service app - self termination!

Not necessarily. Some companies will end employment the day you give notice, as well as cut off pay the same day.

Yeah, working for Kim Corp. in DPRK is kinda like that. They'll definitely cut you off the same day.

You don't have to specify, in your resignation letter, where you are heading to.

But carefully read the non-disclosure part of your employment contract. And your new boss knows it too.

If you have a good rapport with your boss, like you are saying, then usually they will NOT show you the door the same day. In fact it would be expected for most ppl in normal jobs to give appropriate notice and then have some time to wind down their projects and hand off their stuff in a responsible manner before grabbing the picture of the wife and kids and walking out the door.

If you happen to work in a place that you know will not tolerate people giving notice and you are worried about the 2 weeks without pay, then give 0 notice and burn those bridges.

Only you would know what's appropriate for your circumstance.

My understanding is that if you give two weeks notice and they show you door the day you quit, they pay you the two weeks.

If you're worried, just say you're taking time off before looking for the next job.

Not necessarily. Some companies will end employment the day you give notice, as well as cut off pay the same day. Some parts of Oracle will allow two weeks to be worked through and others may not.

You do realize that's not how it works right? When you give notice, you are still employed and being paid for the notice period. Your last day of employment will be the last day of your notice period.

Be courteous and don't burn bridges, esp. if your boss and coworkers have been good to you.
