I am an optician at Sams and last April they changed our lab to Hoya, We no longer share the same lab as Walmart. Our lens are Pentax and prices DROPPED considerably but frames almost doubled in price..No more nice designer frames anymore, just same ugly plastic c-ap with different names on them. We have to use Ipads and our desktops will go away. We had to do away with anything that had Zeiss or Nikon on it...Signage removed, even the ones that shows members get 20% off if they have the plus card.. Pretty sure optical is on its way out, at least as we know it..Rumors of third party are flying around..NVA most likely. I use to enjoy my job, not anymore..

All I know is that the Optical sign on the outside of the building mysteriously disappeared some time last week at the Sam's I work for. Things that make ya go hmmmmmmm...

They should definitely eliminate the optical managers if anything… A licensed optician on staff to dispense should be enough to run that center. All these expenses for nonessential positions is what has the company making these radical decisions in the first place… Just saying.

I've looked into this rumor and it's literally been going on for years. Ever since Sam's Club took over their optical centers from NV some 18+ years ago. Walmart has invested a ton in building their own infrastructure over the years today bring costs down. Why fully upgrade/update the way we process insurance if they're bringing in a third party that won't have access to it?

NVA (National Vision Administrators) has been rumored to be the the third party of choice

Optical use to be third party? Had to have been over 17 years ago. They've built a huge infrastructure over the years. This is how they keep prices so low versus other places, everything is in house. Again, there is no way they would just do it to Sam's Clubs only, Walmarts would be doing it too, yet there is no word on that side.

A third party would not use Boss. They would have their own system. I was with the third party when Sams took us over. It was a nightmare. Now going back seems bizarre but not out of the question. Same thing with wireless. They used to be third party as well. As far as cash office access, when we were third party before we had our own POS system and did not use Sams registers or cash office.

this is exactly what the demo dept faced. about 18 months ago they were going to be given access to all demo screens on the wire. they had to use a mgr or tl sign on to access so the cash office keyed out their stuff and they did the other using mgr sign on. then it never happened. so wmt will have to figure something out for access. opt will need immediate access with their own sign on. possibly that has been taken care of along with demo dept. i parted ways dec 1 and have absolutely no regrets. i was so done with sam’s.

With the infrastructure they have in place, I highly doubt that they would do that. How would any third party employee access BOSS? If they did something like this, it would done to Walmart and Sam's Club at the same time.
