Eliminating backroom?

From @RoAoOC9 --

"At my current store there are 4 ASM positions. Being told that they will be eliminating 2 of those. HI and BC will combine and OPs will be gone.

Backroom will also be eliminated in my store.

These changes are insane."

How is that so? I'm not questioning whether this is true or false, because it sounds very probable. it may not happen in every store but it has probably happened or will happen at several, at least. I'm questioning how they think this is going to work. Are sales associates going to come to work in steel-toed boots and a strain belt, ready to do physical labor in addition to selling a washer and dryer set or ringing out clothes at the CAC? Who wants to be helped by a sweaty, grimy sales associate?

Let's not forget the glaring safety problem this will be. Do they have their checkbook ready for all the lawsuits and the workers comp? Having regular floor associates work the stockroom may work for stores like a drugstore where there isn't anything heavy involved and the volume is smaller. When there's extremely heavy merchandise like exercise equipment, appliances, lawn and garden equipment (tractors in crates, anyone?) etc. to load off the truck, load into a customer vehicle or move around in the stockroom, people are going to get hurt if they don't know what they are doing or are not able to do it. And that five-minute guarantee? Ha! It won't work.

There are many floor associates in my store that are elderly retirees or are otherwise physically handicapped, are they going to make them do this? Or are they going to find clever ways to let them go because they aren't young and "useful" to have around for the purposes of Simple Store, where associates will literally have to do everything and not get paid accordingly?

It's bad enough the softlines and home improvement associates have to put all of their own freight away, since MCA's no longer exist on either part of the store. How well has that worked out? The freight never gets stocked on time and there isn't very much time freed up to help customers. Of course, there are no hours to keep enough people out on the floor to service those customers and work the freight. We've even had negative feedbacks come in about this. Have hours gone up? No.

What about web orders? We (as in the backroom team) can barely get these picked, scanned and packaged as it is now with the lack of hours for the backroom, and even though hours are very low, we are "uncapped" for web orders, meaning there is no limit on what comes through. So backroom can get 30 web orders popping through at the start of the day and those all have to be pulled off the floor, labeled with the pick ticket, sorted, packaged, weighed and labeled again with the shipping label. that takes time if you are doing it right and you are not just throwing random #### in random boxes and calling it a day. Usually it is just one person on staff in the back unless it is a day we have a truck unload, so on a typical day with 20-30 web orders by the start of the day, it won't get done until at least noon, and that's without interruptions. How are floor associates going to process web orders from start to finish, on time?

There are so many other things I'm missing... PMT, RTV, stock location, pick-ups, floor model assembly, ratchet rebuilds, general maintenance if it isn't too complicated...

To whomever @RoAoOC9 is, yeah I agree with you. This is really insane!

I work in the backroom of Sears and have for 4 years now. I just heard we lost our backroom lead who was pretty much the only one in the store that knew how to do things and find things in the system. Even our brain dead store manager would go to him and ask him how to do her job. Obviously, if you haven't figured it out by now SEARS DOESN'T GIVE A SH^T ABOUT YOU! If they did then they would actually hire people that were out of high school and had some work experience and spend the money to take care of and staff the stores. It's only a matter of time people but I for one will be SO happy to not have to spend half my shift logging into a SNC (because our store has only one working one) just so I can do my job. The problems are the same at every store I'm sure Management, Equipment, Lack of staff and hours and procedures written by drunken monkeys from corporate who have absolutely NO CLUE how to run a retail establishment. Yes, the writing is on the wall. Good luck to everyone who has sweated and worked their asses off for Sears with no rewards or acknowledgement.

@ayu-- no this Simple Store concept started at Kmart two years ago but is now being rolled out at Sears. The plan is for the Simple Store concept to go full company by the end of the year.

To find the simple store manual check the emails or go to store operations or search on Pebble.

If your Ops is an ASM they’ll most likely be coming back as an hourly Zone Supervisor.

Get a copy of the Simple Store handbook and you all will see what is coming and why they are doing it. while I do think the Simple store concept could work it cannot and will not work with the hours cut to the numbers they are cut to now.

If you read the handbook you will see all of the cuts that are coming, the suggested hours for each position,-- most are cut in half or more-- and who does what. Like unloading the truck will be done by two-three people max. It doesn't matter if it takes all day that is all they want unloading the truck. They will put the stuff on pallets and as they do the floor associates will place in stock on counters within 24 hours of delivery. Nothing in the back room. To pull online orders everyone will do this with one person packing and shipping. And on it goes. Just read the Simple Store concept handbook.

Yeah, because one touch works so well. The backroom is empty, but the salesfloor is a disaster because all the softlines associates are too busy waiting on customers to be able to straighten. Can't keep people after to clean, or you go over on hours. Down to 2 people unloading a truck now because the carton forecasts are usually 500 pieces lower per truck than we actually get. Bet they don't hand out any more hours for the team to do hardlines and shoes than they have right now. You want me to take a deep breath and trust that this will save the company?

Not likely, all I see is a bunch of minimum wage employees being asked to do more than humanly possible for nothing. I've been through every major reorganizational trial in the last 5 years. None of them has done anything to enhance member experience. Sears customers don't want Wal-Mart lines. They want open registers with no wait, people on the floor to help them in shoe department, salespeople in appliances know what they are talking about and people who can load their cars after they have made a purchase. They don't want to help lift the pool table, they expect us to do it for them.

And that is hard to do when you already only have one person in the backroom and you have to get the manager and your entire HA and HI department off the floor to load.

Combining departments and cutting even more payroll isn't going to enhance member experience, it's only going to ensure we have no members.

Our Kmart lost its backroom lead over a year ago. We briefly had a part-time one, but they were completely incompetent and management had them working freight most if the time anyway, so it was still whatever key carrier checking in venders then as it is now. The backroom itself is a disaster. Pallets are moved around to wherever there is room like one of those sliding puzzles. There is no regard for organization, so freight that needs to go out will be buried behind multiple pallets of junk that doesn't. There are fixtures just strewn about everywhere, as most people who take them off the floor will just leave them in the first conveniently empty spot they find. It's all an OSHA violation waiting to happen.

Back room is going to be headlines and shoes sales support. They will still unload truck and do mpu. But in addition they will also be doing ad set, pog, and all other functions of mca team. There is nothing in the backroom since on touch rolled out last year. So they are moving backroom associates to sales floor..

Calm down. Back room is not going anywhere. On this page we heard:

Kmart was closing Tuesday.

All aSM’S would be eliminated.

All leads would be gone

Etc.

Most were “fake news”. This is too. Just relax . Take a hit on the pipe, calm yourself.

We are making some changes that ultimately will improve the member experience and save this company.

Now go relax and be happy.

@RpntPKT- this IS insane!! There is more to the backroom than people realize!! If this happens it will drive the rest of what customers are left out for good!

Our backroom people are awesome! And don’t forget you help people out at the kiosk too!

Good luck!
