I'm not defending Eddie Lampert but those guys oversee companies that have laid off employees.
Every company eventually goes through a layoff. It might be huge, it might be small, but things change and it leads to layoffs.
By the way one of these guys, Jamie Dimon (CEO of BoA) took home his bonuses while taking bailout money (ahem, TAX DOLLARS) from Congress. I think that's more despicable than anything Eddie has done.
