Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Laying off freshers

My manager told me some time ago that nobody gets laid off in their first year at Cisco. That's the time given to engineers to proof themselves.

Several other engineers told me stories over the years about whole team getting laid off except freshers.

Now, I read here the last couple of days that freshers do get laid off in their first year from time to time.

What is true?

Managers say sh*t to keep employees mouths shut. Anyone anywhere anytime can get laid off here.. Its a business and depending on business needs people are removed or added. It is not a family that promises you protection. Seriously stop dreaming and asking these stupid questions anymore! jeez!

When whole groups go, they sometimes are told they have 2 weeks to find another job. What jobs? Miraculously, sometimes (not always) the freshers get offered one posthaste without any effort at all.

Basic rule is morons are less likely to be laidoff if the manager is also a moron.

Fresher's aren't safe. If you're terrible at your job, with no improvement in sight, if you aren't LR'ed, you won't get promo or pay rises, and the next batch of grads will come in on a higher salary than you. Seen it many times. Always for candidates that are the managers top picks too :/

(Though, the engineer's top picks usually leave within 2 - 3 years for better pay and opportunities anyway).

Yes.

You're fücked, if they decide that you're the sacrificial offering of the day.

Have seen this innumerate times.

One of the best writers we had got LR'd, although I think it was about a year and two months. It was to lower the overall age average of all the over 50s who were laid off, to get rid of any age-related lawsuits. Looking at the sheet was funny, it had 30 people over 50 and three or four in their mid-20s.

My co-worker was laid off after four months. His severance package was more money than his regular cumulative paychecks.

As far as I see, if you are from the same area as your VP or Sr Director, you are safe. It is nearly always true if you are from South Asia for some known reasons. You are new or not doesn’t matter. Your performance doesn’t count either.

Poppycock! I know of, at least, 3 newbies who were sent packing (i.e. laid off) within 6 months of being hired. One of them after only a month and a half.

If you want job security, open your own business and be your own boss.
