I believe the days of voluntary packages are over. Dell is massively overstaffed, and they need to cut headcount to reduce opex, while trying to retain talent. They are losing way to much money per quarter to let their best people volunteer to leave and walk away with a nice package. Any time a voluntary separation package is offered, the best and brightest are the first ones to step up since they know they can get another job easily. I worked for Dell for 15 years and two years ago the group I worked in offered a package to voluntarily separate. Myself and the other senior person in the group both took the package, which amounted to about 10 months salary plus prorated bonus and insurance coverage for 6 months. The manager was too interested in cutting the budget and gave both of us the package. I'm still in touch with other members of the group, and they have never recovered from losing their two most senior engineers, even though it made their budget look better, and I'm now much happier having moved to a start up with about the same salary/compensation package I received at Dell. This has been a common thread throughout Dell.

first reorg, then lay off. Dell is highly predictable. no new ideas remember? same people calling the same shots every year.
