Thread regarding Chesapeake Energy Corp. layoffs

How come we didn't know this was coming?

Maybe it's just me, but I was really blindsided by what happened yesterday. I know a threat of layoffs always hangs over our heads, but I didn't really see something of this magnitude happening with so little warning.

Is this on me? Or did this really come out of the blue? And if it did, does it mean that from now on we have to fear layoffs every waking moment?

Sorry, I know I'm rambling a bit, I'm just really shaken by what happened.

Whoever posted about management knowing in December and being too dishonest to tell us then -please quit now. You are too freaking stupid to have a job. Let’s me assume they did know. They should have surprised people with a layoff at Christmas. Wow. I see a bright future in management for you. Im not a supervisor but im smart enough to see that. And that it probably isn’t a brilliant idea to tell people layoffs are coming but not do them right away.

FYI - they aren’t done. In 2013, 2015 - big layoff preceded and followed by smaller separation numbers. Yes: they will also turn around and hire people back as consultants to wrap up or transition projects as needed. Who is let go is mostly due to numbers and not “dead weight.” That’s BS. Both good and poor performers, good and bad attitudes are let go. To those still at CHK - it’s both relief and dread. To those who were laid off - take what you’ve learned. The hardest thing is the people you’ll miss seeing day to day. Take a breather, enjoy a couple weeks with no email and no demands. There’s life after CHK. Make it what you want!

If you were blindsided - then you just had your head buried in the sand. Chk was and STILL is over staffed!

Even with knowing chk is in bad shape and that layoffs are possible, you can still be justified in feeling blindsided. The number of people was surprising and the decisions seemed to have been drawn from a hat. We knew it was coming. But we were still blindsided.

I'm sticking around until my bonus and then gtfo this toxic, idiotic culture. I've been through too much with them and it's still the same story. No ones really watching the pot and it's boiling over. Management is too stuck in their own goals to even begin to understand what's needed in day to day operations. It's like being in a burning house where everyone else is just hanging out.

I don’t even work for Chesapeake and I heard about the impending lay off back in December. How can you be blind-sided?

Was the last layoff 4 years ago? Seems like they got 400 then too. CHK has been under tremendous debt for years. I guess it should never come as a surprise. But it is painful, nonetheless.

CHK has too many people for the asset base. It’s that simple! “ Depriving people of their blah blah blah ??? “. Just stupid. The company only needs the employees it can AFFORD!

Management knew last December according to various posts. What that means is that you cannot trust the CHK management to be honest. They preach core values but they are incompetant liars which goes against the value statement. Depriving good people of their jobs, medical insurance etc. and incurring an expensive layoff is unecessary if staff levels and talent are managed appropriately every day. I am not faulting HR because they have almost no power at CHK. There is no leadership at the top and that is obvious.

Out of the blue? Really? Do you watch the market? Do you see the stock price? Educate yourself, please.

Look at the debt - how in the hell could this possibly be out of the blue.

What the stockholders want to know is who is buying the company? Is it BP?

Yes Manager were told back before Christmas. We even had a few upper management/directors leave earlier this month but they got their bonuses. Keep this in mind, every time there is a VP reorg that is a hint of some impending transitions.

This did seem out of the blue. I knew a few changes were coming soon but you aren’t the only one who was blindsided. Everyone looks shell shocked. And it’s worse because it wasn’t performance based. Our worst performers and newest employees are still here.
