Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

It’s nothing personal!

My full time employment ends this Saturday. It s---s. I was the least senior full time person in my department even after almost 3 years. I did see the writing I the wall and have been in talks for better jobs over the last few weeks even before I got the news. No offers yet, but fingers crossed. Brick and Mortar retail are going through tough times, to say the least. If you are able and have access to employment programs in your area to get training in a trade or get funding for a degree, do it! If you are over 50, many states have programs for you, as well. I don’t have any ill will toward management at my store. Their jobs are about to get much harder. And who knows how long any stores outside of the huge metropolitan areas will stay open. Please check out your employment help services available. Sure stockholders demands s--- and Macy’s would do better with investment into well trained associates, but that isn’t happening for us. Keep positive and move forward!

I am at peace with all of that. I have a degree and a former career that have dabbled in freelance with in the time I have worked at Macy’s. I am in a better position to move on than most of my colleagues. I will help them and give every bit of advice to the new manager I can think of. I may not be happy with the Macy’s stock holders, but I have no inclination to screw over a group of people I have come to love and want them to be in the best position to earn as long as possible.

If you were in the home department then all general selling across your entire store were put in a list and then they knew the number of Ft and Pt jobs they kept and the number of people over that total in each were the ones to let go, in order of least seniority. So it’s not because you were the least senior in your department, it’s because you were one of the least senior in the whole store. Someone else in the store with more seniority might move into your job. That’s what starts next week. They know how many full time and part time are supposed to be in each department and now have to move people around to get to those totals.
