Our store had to sign a document that said we wouldnt stop anyone from walking out the door. One of out front end people tried to stop someone by just asking to see their receipt and the front end person was written up.

Sears eliminated many APM and LP positions during the past years, because employee and outside theft was simply out of control.

Theft. It's still out of control at Sears, which means the pursuit and prosecution of Sears employees or crazy customers for stealing isn't worth the effort to prosecute. Sears daoes "refer" cases for prosecution from time to time, as their effort to suggest Sears is "tough" on theft. Incredibly, a referal for prosecution frequently runs into a "wall" and is never finalized.

Do you actually think a District Attorney or other Prosecutor is going to prosecute someone for stealing a Vacuum Sweeper, Blender, Hair Dryer, Pair of cheaply-manufactured Jeans? It's a joke. Sears does not now, and has not in the past, given a damn about theft in their stores. They just "write it up" as a cost of doing (lousy) business.

the shoplifters at Sears are really old or they would know better to shoplift elsewhere

Any retailer without onsite AP does not have a leg to stand on when it comes to

shrink caused by shoplifting.

And because managers and associates aren't selected and trained in AP processes, nobody can do anything. We watch them walk out, that is all.

It's a waste of time to try to fight this when you can't do anything (can't even call the police) and if you do end up deterring one thief, three others pop up. Add to the fact that I/we don't get paid to "scare" shoplifters away. I'm not going to offer "customer service" to a potential thief when there are legitimate customers that want to buy something.

I figure if Sears doesn't care enough to pay for dedicated AP (ones that are actually in the store and not 100 miles away watching feeds on an iPad) or to train a few of us to apprehend these lowlifes, then screw it, I'm not going to care either.

Yes. Shoplifting subreddits are one of the many sites/boards we get info from.
