Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

Total joke

Went to call a buddy of mine in Schenectady, his land line was taken away. What joke, cost cutting , I had to call another buddy to get his cell number, he has this number for 29 years. No, the main line did not forward me to new number. GE needs to be broke up. Did they get rid of Russell Stokes land line as well?

Here is an idea for a major impact score. Start charging employees for their parking spot. You may laugh but it was discussed at one point.

It's not just land lines. Remote and Service people who spend their time traveling to make money for GE are being asked to get their on cell phone and plan, then let GE put all their crap on it to get email and Skype. Nope, not happening with me. If my only means of work communications is via cell phone then they are d@mn sure going to supply it, not me. Years back they took away all the home office lines and stopped paying for our internet service used mostly for work operations. Then had the nerve to say "You need to install one of our VOIP phones". Sorry, my internet connection I pay for, you aren't connecting anything to it.

For about 5 years it has been nothing but take, there has been no give back. Haven't had a raise in 3 years and now they say none for '18, all while money is being wasted on stupid crap.

I am just one of many long term people researching my options......

Ever since the failed foray into digital work Predix and "Brilliant Factory" GE has been getting more and more Office Space. I wouldn't be surprised to see someone go full Milton at some point...

Exactly, to your point all black magic six sigma cost savings. NOT!

Here is an idea , install pay toilets in each building they can generate profits this way!

They may have taken my phone, but they had better not take my stapler!

They switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it's not okay because if they take my stapler, I'll.. I'll.... I'll... set the building on fire.

Yeah what I hear in the office is business being done on the phones. Very few personal calls.

Its not even a land line. Its a software connection in the PBX which is in house GE property. Unless they reduced the Bell supplied trunk lines no savings will result. More like a BS show by mgmt than anything else. As others have said VOIP...prob can use same pbx and talk all day for free. Maybe they want people to work and not Gossip on the phone all day?

This was brought up because GE does nothing but screw their employees, to benefit who? It sure is not because of the stock price. How’s that going ? If not done to benefit clients or suppliers. It is done because of some dumb A$$ six sigma Project !

I use Skype for business, it is one of the biggest POS out there. OBTW, to get a toll free or call in number for your clients to us on skype does cost $$. Please do not tell me all people have skype , tell that to FPL, Dominion , National Grid or PSEG. You know the companies GE Power has to deal with tell them they cannot connect a conference call because your only way to communicate is skype. Land lines are a cost of business. What a bunch of A$$ clowns here that try to justify GE lame decisions.

Pretty sad actually, if all you idiots didn't update your customers with the new number, that's on you. Quit blaming the company because your head is in your a$$.

Skype is a much better solution. Now, instead of picking up my phone to call my counterpart in the UK, I schedule a Skype meeting and spend 40 minutes fussing with the dropped connection. Efficient!

Yes Sonny, they still use land lines out there in the real business world. Attitudes like yours are what killed GE. I don't think it can be salvaged because of idiots like you making decisions without enough experience. Just keep going to the employee's pocket to cover your stupid epic mistakes.

Customers tend to call when they're angry and want answers yesterday. See how being unreachable does for the net promoter score...

I don't think anyone uses land line phones for a business function anymore. Customers can email, text or call on your mobile.

Read my post, I said his landline was completely removed. Not transferred to VOIP. His number just turned off. What Is worse was I could not even dial by his last name to reach this person. If you owned your own business you would not just cancel a phone number of a current employee and not transfer it or make it possible for someone to reach a 29 year veteran of the company who busts his A$$ for that sh!t hole every day. The leadership needs to go bye bye there. All they care about is saving pennies because someone says the stock price is in trouble. Someone should write book on how to not run a public ally traded company. If I were a stock analyst I would paste bullseye on this POS company “as a never waste one dollar investing in this company”. If this how you need to save money disconnecting landlines then they got bigger problems. Hey, measure the x’s and predict the stock circling the toilet bowl!

My landline number got reassigned to an intern. A frustrated customer (from Exelon) tried calling me about another recent combustion failure and apparently got this kid instead. When she finally got in touch with me, she was quite angry, and I'm sure the phone misdirection didn't help.

Of course there's no budget for getting new business cards printed, so now I just hand them out with my desk number crossed out. Yes, this is how a DOW 30 company operates. (for now, anyway)

Land lines are not just for us. They are for the people we do business with. Stupid move getting rid of them.

No matter, they've been doing the layoffs anyway, and will continue to do so. They only saved about $25/mo per VOIP landline (check your "My Spend" at mytech.ge.com to see for yourself). They save a lot more by cutting headcount entirely.

It's pretty simple - GE can cut some services or amenities (desk phones, change to Skype) or they can lay workers off. Seems like either way, people here whine. Sad!

( I thought the millennials were the entitled ones!)

True. Here in Windsor, heard landlines going away in lieu of Skype. However, no idea how outsiders would reach me if there is no forward to Skype from old #. No VM either.

Landlines are being replaced with Skype though at this point it is an option to keep it for most while Skype bugs are worked out. It is happening at a lot of companies and a growing percentage of homeowners are dropping land lines for cell and VOIP products. This is not just GE.
