Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Is anybody safe at IBM?

I've been reading about many layoffs that have taken place at IBM lately and I've noticed that majority of those laid off are older workers who have been with the company the longest.

Yet, when I try to talk to my father about it, he keeps saying that I shouldn't worry about him and that he is safe, even if he is in that same category.

Is he right? Is anybody actually safe at IBM right now?

Perfect post > "quit IBM, then you will be safe"

That's it in a nutshell.

Noone is safe at IBM. I was laid off in one of the RA's in 2016. The layoffs are targeted profiling one thing: age. I was 62 at the time with 20 years at IBM. Had numerous awards and other performance recognition. If you work at IBM and are over 50, you better start looking unless you have a skillset that is very unique which cannot be replaced by an offshore resource. Fortunately, there is life after IBM because other companies value experience and hard work.

No one is safe at IBM, especially older workers... I am sure your father has an exit strategy...

If your father is on a visa from a third-world country, or lives and works in a third-world country, then he might be safe. I say might - even people in India are being impacted, because IBM has found even cheaper workers in Africa and other places. Nobody in the US, Canada, Europe, Australia are safe. This one's going to be big (this week or next) and then another in the fall.

Theoretically some people should be safe, if they are valuable in a "strategic initiative" area. But there have been layoffs there as well. There does not seem to be any logic sometimes as to who gets laid off. So I would have to say no, no one is safe.
