Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Canada - please contact

I’m looking to track anyone impacted by the Canada RA taking place today, April 19, 2018.

The people I’ve spoken to do not have fair offers and we are looking to gather more evidence and consider our options.

If you wish to share please reach out to CdnIBMRA@gmail.com

I heard that up to 75 people in SW Group were affected in Canada - both sales and tech sales.

Is it me or are there way too many VP's at IBM. Do we need 4 levels of VPs? You will never see the company flatten management levels - instead they bring out the pink slips to the real people who keep the company running - then once they make their headcount numbers - they begin the process of re-hiring so they can pay a recent graduate half or less what an experienced professional gets - except what they don't see is that this recurring cycle is the reason for IBM's poor performance quarter after quarter, year after year. Which is why IBM hates dealing severance in countries like Canada, Germany, France etc where real labour laws exist. Why do you think there were little to no RA's in those countries last year? Collocation is one way to reduce headcount in those countries - force them into the office and a 2 hour commute - make them unhappy so they quit.

Severance in Canada is different than in the US - there are provincial laws as to minimum required severance but there's also common law (court precedents) that usually sets a higher bar. So an unethical employer could offer you a severance that meets the legal req't but not the common law standard - you then would have to take them to court to try to get the difference.

Why do I think this is a lawyer looking for clients?

A large number of US employees were let go as well -- IBM has been figuring out ways to reduce the benefits and to count the resource actions as performance issues rather than layoffs. So no surprise that those impacted feel that it is unfair. Might be on the edge of legal - but certainly does not feel ethically or morally correct.
