Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Tech world enjoying this

I work for a big tech co and it's no secret that Qualcomm people are often highly egotistical and hard to work with due to "always being right." Lots of us are quietly cheering this on and look forward to it getting much worse soon.

Maybe some humble pie is in order for Qualcomm people, lots and lots of humble pie. I for one will exercise what influence I have to prevent laid off Q people from being hired here, at least in my department.

I doubt I'm alone in this sentiment.

I will hire, but they will have to accept less money and longer hours. Their arrogance is disgusting.

Agree and disagree.

This statement might apply to certain individuals, but you get this type everywhere.

Dismissing any resumes coming from ex Q candidates?

Don't let stereotypes dismiss good talent!

If you are in charge of hiring I expect that you will evaluate skills based on attitude. You will know by now how to evaluate this type of things.

My point is...do not fit everyone in the same cathegory and give it a chance.

Please!

@1pad +1. Completely agree that excluding few, Staff, Sr. staff and Prip Eng at Qualcomm are one of the best in industry. They know what they are doing. They deserve high perks. Qualcomm is a great company to work for. It depends on what you consider great. If one views work challenge as priority then Qualcomm is a great company to work for. Yes, some bad management decision and narrow vision at Executive level is responsible for all the cost cutting. If one loves to debug problems or identity one then Qualcomm is a place to be. And if one wants to move higher up in the food chain, one has to always increase their expertise.

the truth is we're victims of our own success. Intel have been trying for years to make a comparable modem and they're not even close. we beat mediatek at their own game and like it or not, no other company can compete with the Q. we have been and will continue to dominate the mobile space. so take your hate and envy and s--- it up chumps.

Lots of intelligent posts here and valid points.

But, even with the drawbacks, Q is still able to put the best products in market. The kind products that Intel/Microsoft/Google/Motorola etc failed and still failing at. It's not something engineers/sr. engineers alone can achieve. There are lots and lots of extremely intelligent principle/sr. staff/staff engineers worked for this. All these guys are among the tops in the industry that other corps could only can day-dream to get. I know this because I'm one of them.

Agree with OP. So many resumes from QCOM full of "led", "lead"/"drive", etc. Every other engineer appears to be a driver of some sort. No wonder the company is where it is today.

OP - impressive. Your observation is very accurate. Many directors and above need to put their own SD engineers to control the global team. Hence a lot resumes use "led...." not "implement" .... they mainly ask cheaper geo location teams to implement things !

Here is what I have observed with Qualcomm applicants. I have been involved in filling many reqs across a few functions (PM, PgM, Engg., Engg Management) and seniority (IC, Managers, Directors)

Product Managers are glorified "power point" presenters. The PM group at Qualcomm does not shape product direction. They do go and present the product to external audiences. A better title would be marketing associate.

Program Management is useless. There is no practicing the discipline for PgMs. They are terrible technically. A lot of the posts on this forum about useless status collectors are probably started as a result of interacting with such PgMs. I am sure excellent individuals would exist at Qualcomm in this function. However, as a company, from the outside, there does not seem to be genuine respect and development of this discipline.

Engineers - Junior engineers are good. They can probably hold their own against similar people at any tech. company. The competetivenesss declines at higher levels (there is also title inflation). More importantly, at some point in their career, they stop producing technical artifacts and start to direct the work of others (filling in for the lack of rigor on the PgM ladder I think). This is rewarded at Qualcomm. One only has to read the resume of the senior engineers to see what the organization rewarded. Its always - "lead a large team across geographical boundaries". It is never - "Designed and implemented this complex technical deliverable".

Engg. Managers - On the technical side, they are terrible. Any semblance of technical skill is long lost. On the personnel management side, they are actually very good. They must deal with people, incentivize them, retain them etc. The environment at Qualcomm is very challenging to deliver on this axis. They are battle hardened.

I think it is not fair to apply this to all engineers in Qualcomm.

It is a big company.

I have met these engineers because of my company’s services. They are all smart, hard working employees and take pride in their work.

Maybe they were let go from Q because of complacency? I've known far more humble and friendly engineers at Qualcomm than arrogant ones. The arrogant ones don't tend to stay long because no one likes to work with them.

Ha Ha OP. Rejected by the Q and can't let it go. You will peak at staff engineer at current company, that is if you aren't shown the door too.

Agree. In the midst there are honest, bright , good hard working engineers who will end up suffering due do the poor reputation. Sad situation.

I have to agree with this. I was involved with the hiring of a high level technical person from Q and it turned out to be a terrible decision. Lots of arrogance and zero contribution. I'm currently in the process of filling several engineering reqs. Q resumes will go directly into the trash. No, this is not a troll post. This post is intentionally vague on the details as I do not want to out the individual.
