Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Why are we so dependent on China?

Seriously, why did we put most of our eggs in one foreign basket that does not like foreign companies all that much? And that is particularly known for making life difficult for said companies?

And now we are shocked that it is coming back to bite is in the a--?

It's always bad to focus on a single market, especially a hostile one. I'm surprised things haven't went south sooner.

... "China has the whole modern infrastructure to deliver many products."

Correction:

China has the whole modern infrastructure to deliver many CHEAP, DISPOSABLE products. They produce a lot of sh!t, and that's exactly what it is SH!T.

@kpy if a company like Q uses low cost workforces in the countries like China, then they must consider that things might be stolen. It is kind of digging your own hole. That's why in many cases sites in such countries do not get the most actual projects (to protect next generation products) but you cannot prevent everything. If you get something then you must give something. Nothing is for free in life.

I am surprised people who works in this industry would ask this kind of question. You should be laid off.

Because China has a growing market with 1.3 billion people (vs 300M in US) and they make 90% of the smartphones for the world.

China is not just about cheap labor. Many southeast Asian countries and India's labor are even cheaper but only China has the whole modern infrastructure to deliver many products.

"Why are we so dependent on China?"

Cheap labor, low cost - appeases the shareholders any days. That is if the shareholders aren't still sleeping on this stock holding. More are asleep though.

"Qualcomm gets almost two-thirds of its revenue from China"

https://www.bloomberg.com/gadfly/articles/2018-03-21/qualcomm-nxp-china-snag-is-just-the-start-for-m-a-tit-for-tat

So 67% of your salary comes from China. If China goes away (because of trade war etc), then your salary will drop by 67% or... literally you lose your job.
