The Island stores mentioned (and often endeared heavily by corprate, management, and brain washed Kmart lovers alike) never fully recovered post Hurricane Maria. The stores in St. Croix especially suffered the brute of the damage and were never fully restored to what they were before, and even pre Hurricane the structure fared horrible under the seasonal rain. Delapitated rat infested crap holes.
Given time, competition will beat Kmart with little effort and capitalize market share, even in regions where Kmart has established majority. Evidenced by Kmarts exit of Alaska in 2002, only 9 years after the Kmart opened, and most recently Kmart closings in the islands of Hawaii.
If the Island stores were as lucrative as mentioned there would have been a greater emphasis on continual expansion into the Caribbean after emerging bankruptcy. It would never materialize because it was a large waste of resources and highlighted the kind of wasteful spending that landed them in Chapter 11, and should have brought Kmart to demise.
