Thread regarding State Farm Insurance layoffs

For the folks that left where are you going?

Just curious where the folks that have left the company are working now? Did you stay in Insurance, was the pay comparable. Did you leave insurance and where did you go. A lot of decision for a 20+ employee that relocated to a hub for the opportunities.

I took a government contract job; I work out of my home office, manage my own schedule and no longer wake up with a sense of dread every morning.

I'm not even angry about how I was treated (typical of how they are treating the over 50 folks now) anymore.

I'm just so happy that I left.

The good 100-140k salaryes in Bloomington are more like 150-210k in a hub... which is why we get no applicants with experience... they just go down the road where someone will pay the going rate for their skills.

Two points:

1) That salary is typical of certain IT skill sets for senior level jobs, not just at State Farm but across the industry.

2) The "changes" we're making in IT aren't changing anything about the basic salary structure. Which is good, since State Farm is going to have to be more competitive to compete in the hub markets.

You seem similar to the clown who was posting ridiculous nonsense about Systems salaries about 5 months ago. Was that you?

Depending upon skillset, that is not an unusually high salary. As I mentioned in an earlier post, my very first offer after leaving the farm was for 140K.

This is emblematic of an organization that does not pay for performance. Agents get rewarded for personal performance-employees not so much. This is why we are loaded with C and if lucky B players. Rare to find an A player anywhere.

Retired after 10 years at farm, age 62. 130K.

Throughout my IT career I worked hard to learn new technologies, accumulate certifications and moved every 3-4 years to advance. 10 years at one location was the exception, I didn't move because I liked my sf work.

My suggestion is to be nimble, accept only work that you enjoy (you will perform better if happy) and keep resume updated every year.

Agree. The Farm is completely a dead end. The only people promoted are those that say yes to whatever and have no ideas or experiences those who have relation or ties to cutprrent Leadership. Then we sit back and wonder why we aren’t competitive. Gee... wonder why?

I was making roughly 110,000 USD at State Farm.

My first job offer was for 140,000 USD + bonus + stock options

The job I eventually accepted was 128,000 USD.

Systems people who live outside of BLM (like the canned remote workers, for example), or who are willing to relocate will find very active job markets with no shortage of jobs, provided they have a legitimate Systems skill.

I worked on the Architecture side. Since March 31st, I've had 3 interviews and 2 offers and have accepted a job with another insurance company.

Pay is significantly higher than what I was making, and benefits are better.

I will look into working for a major airline. Starting salary is of far less importance than the potential for advancement. My next career I will not stop until I'm a vice president. The Farm is a complete dead end.

after 23 years I got laid off and went to work handling injury claims for trucking company. Handle claims all across the company. We have SIR of $1 million. The work is much more interesting.

Downside is I took this job ten years ago making $67,500 after making 95k with the farm. I've not come close to making what I was making.

Good thing is I've travelled all over the country as I do about 20 mediations a year. I am treated exceedingly well by the attorneys we use. I attend mediation in Manhattan a couple times a year. I get to play golf at some nice courses and eat at a lot of 5 star restaurants paid for by my attorney.

Plus I work from home a lot.

Look at Sedgwick, Broadspire etc.
