More major layoffs?

Are we looking at any more major layoffs any time soon? There has been very little chatter on it, which makes me feel hopeful.

I know people are saying there are employees being laid off nearly all the time, but I am not talking about those layoff, I'm asking specifically about major layoffs ones that include hundreds of people.

June and November will have a large number of performance terminations. There will be additional resource actions throughout the year.

What "loophole" ? Mgrs are useless for avoidance of RA's they are even more at risk and have absolutely no control. The list is the list. Plenty of top notch talent got cut , top performers, some of the best sales people got cut. And some good mgrs where let go. Not sure where you got this info

IBM's strategy is more about creating an environment of fear so that more people at all levels will jump off of the sinking titanic. This is evidenced by monthly head count reductions regardless of performance. It is so sad to see shareholders hard earned money funding the lifestyles of the "rich and famous" executives while hardworking revenue producers are forced to go with IBM's biggest competitors. Still we wonder how IBM can be so far behind Microsoft, AWS and Google. When we look at the leadership initiatives of these companies along with substantial top line and bottom line growth, we notice that employees are also happy and engaged. Not the case with IBM, this place is toxic! Big question is when will the IBM ship hit an iceberg and break apart?

IBM is run by incompetence that is squandering its legacy and wasting its talent thanks to Ginni's lack of vision and autocratic style, and thanks (not BS @doh) to her middle-management which is dominated by the self-serving with no demonstrable talent to expand the business or inclination to roll up their sleeves in difficult times.

Companies like Amazon, Apple, Facebook, are already forces to reckon with in every one of IBMs strategic initiatives, Blockchain, and Quantum.

It is time big investors on wall street vote for a reset of IBM management.

Xsc. You are completely correct. End of June will be the next blood letting. The head winds are pretty strong, and IBM cannot afford to take the “big” hit in Sept. Better to take 3 smaller hits (one per quarter), as Mainframe Sales will decrease at an accelerated rate due to the sales cycle. The tax implications are already baked into the cake, and the currency implications are already hedged. NET NET they cannot go backwards on earnings per share, and they have already announced savings will come almost exclusively via head count cuts. ALSO note IBM dividend increase was throttled back to try and save money. The Street was expecting 10 cents. They got 7 cents. Every penny helps This transition to a cloud company has really become a transition to an earnings per share company. NOTE earnings per share are easily manipulated vs bringing new technologies and procedures to market. Ginni is holding a pair of two’s and trying to bluff her way to win. The street called her. It’s time to show your cards or fold. My guess is they follow HPE’s playbook and break the company up to maximize shareholder value.

Many will be lucky to have a summer vacation. End of June will be another round. IBM still has layers of fat. So many project managers, directors..... Enjoy Spring, the hammer will drop again in June .

This is BS... I know a lot of managers (myself included) that fought for the jobs of our team. And many of us almost (or in some cases) lost our jobs as a result.

It seems most layoffs only hit parts of the company. The ones that got hit this time are destroyed but that doesn't mean other groups can't be hit any time soon.

The last one in 1Q was fairly significant. Many people (including some "bleed-blue" execs) have had it and are leaving on their own. The internal organizations are shaken up. At the end of a meeting, even some clients wonder if they will get to see the same IBM employees in the next meeting. IBM is hopefully not going to make all this even worse with another major layoff soon.

So, this last one will carry IBM for another 2 quarters. By that time, the environment would have stabilized but numbers would likely still be bad. So, another layoff may be executed before the end of the year.

Sao. As I said. Go read the transcript. The big boys pressed quite hard as to how are you going to fix IBM. The CFO honestly had no answer except “the cloud will save us” The result was 15 bucks off the share price in a manner of days. Since IBM is 98% institutionally heald, this means the institutions need to get a greater return out of IBM via the dividend to hold, or they are pushing the stock knowing management will change or a breakup of the company is in the offing Either way Ginni and her exec team have had their run and it has failed. IBM Board. It’s time for a change

@wne "headwinds?" You mean "everything doesn't always perfectly go my way?" Are the people that run IBM really that stupid? There will always be challenge and good leaders can handle them without making stupid panic decisions like laying off the only people who know how to do critical jobs.

Bpw. Go straight to the horses mouth. In this case the CFO. You can download from IBM investors relations the 1st q earnings conf call. In that call, the Wall Street firms get to ask questions concerning the operations of IBM. These are the big guys on Wall Street. They specifically asked “since IBM is facing headwinds as the year goes by. (Eg currency, taxes, winding down of the mainframe Sales cycle, and winding down of IP revenue) how are you going to make up for those slowdowns, and keep your 13.80 forecast The CFO’s answer was “remix” of the current skill sets to take advantage of cloud. NET NET layoffs. Remember they took approx 620 million in charges in the first q for down sizing. My guess is they will have to match that to make up for the head winds. Again remember in 1st q they had a 5% tail wind and a pretty good tax report with a very good mainframe sale cycle. NET NET the rest of the year looks to be tough on the employees

You can speak to your manager but they will tell you nothing. It is a numbers game and jobs aren't saved. I know plenty of people who quit to save others jobs and the others were still RAd. Once your name in picked from the hopper, there is no changing it and honestly not worth it.

The most effective way for IBM employees to avoid a layoff is to speak to a manager. You need to find the IBMer who made the decision to terminate your position and then talk to his or her manager. One odd quirk at IBM is managers never side with their employees: therefore if an IBMer tags your job for Resource Action then the IBM manager will automatically reverse the RA. From my experience working at IBM this strategy will yield results.

You need to exploit this loophole and speak to a manager and oftentimes this will involve contacting a senior-level executive, perhaps even an IBM vice president. It is nearly 100-per-cent effective and also the only realistic means of saving your job at IBM.
