Thread regarding IBM layoffs

It's gonna be ugly.

RA this week and out by the last day of March with one month severance. You can take that to the bank. It's the same deal the folks who got RA'd in the US last month got. I seriously doubt IBM is going to become more generous. I just saw some info on the 1Q pipeline for cloud, M&P, Integration & Development, etc and sales are way off projections. It's gonna be ugly.

As far as presumpuous, people have a lot of reasons for not being able to leave. Maybe only need a year to qualify for HSA, lump-sum pension, etc. Maybe debt due to a kid with medical problems or other family tragedies. Maybe caring for disabled parents. Maybe not enough to retire but unable to get a new job due to living in a rural area and not able to move because of housing market or the aforementioned problems. Maybe unable to compete in an IT world full of 20-something year old H-1B visa holders shacking up ten to an apartment and working for minimum wage. Everyone's going through a lot of stress with this, so the hostility is really pretty ignorant.

Hey -far you presumptuous idiot - I'm the one that said that. I am saving someone's job. A young coworker with a family was actually on the list and I volunteered to my manager, taking his place since my kids are grown and I was going to leave anyway. So think about it before you talk smack.

Amen:

I'm tired of people saying "I can't wait to get out of here". Just shut up and quit. You might be saving the job of someone who really needs it.

Most likely some dumb*ss copy and pasted one of the old separation agreements from back when it was 90 days zombie time instead of the most recent two weeks notice. Wouldn't surprise me a bit, Every aspect of this company is dysfunctional at this point and morale is extremely low. Hopefully this is over soon, I know I'm on the list, can't wait to be done with the stressful waiting and start the new chapter in my life - a much less stressful one with the sinking titanic IBM in the rear-view mirror.

Understood original agreements to go out were 90 days notice + 30 day severance in the US (which surprised me based on the terms of last month's action). If they pulled those back for new terms, my guess would be a switch to the 2 weeks notice + 30 days severance.

Someone just posted on Watching IBM:

"Was told today that pending separation agreements are being pulled so they can be refiled under terms that will be announced to managers this week. If anyone believes these terms will be an improvement on the current separation package I have a bridge I’d like to sell you, and no, it’s not a bridge to retirement"

I wonder if they'll still do it this week, or that gives a reprieve. Probably still this week, but more likely Friday now, I'm thinking. I wonder what they took away this time though. Perhaps the month's severance pay or the $2,500 education allowance? Or a change to the healthcare terms? They can't do less than the two weeks notice they gave last time so it has to be something else.
