Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

No more cost cutting?

It seems to me that cost cutting is no longer necessary now given the situation ? What would be the reason to lower cost?

Qualcomm has historically spent R&D dollars very inefficiently by funding projects long after they prove to have have value to the bottom line (Mirisol). Spending more money doesn’t mean we are spending the money wisely. I look around and see projects that are over staffed and projects that are mostly experimental and that at best might result in an obscure patent to be filed away. The company could reduce headcount and spending in my opinion while keeping the the most viable projects if they truly analyzed projects more like Hock Tan but with more of an eye to the future than Hock would. But that would mean the cuts would need to be analyzed from an engineering as well financial viewpoint, and I would guess a lot of these decisions as to cuts may be made by HR groups, or by managers whose main interest is to protect their pet projects to the detriment of the company as a whole. Management needs to be made more accountabe for their staffing and spending and required to demonstrate results by the VPs in my opinion.

"Cost cutting reduces Qualcomm's ability to innovate. "

Sure it does. But shareholders dont care. They want their cost cutting and improved EPS/dividends/returns. And Q spend more than almost any one else in the sector; so..........cut cut cut. Give it back to shareholders. Its there $$ and they want it. Further more, they are highly suspicious of SMs sudden promises.............

Employees are expensive resources. Given the execs cannot suddenly magic new stream of income; cost cutting is inevitable in order to bow down to the god of shareholder value.

Of course it is dummy. They care more about the shareholders than the employees. They are still going to cut $1.5b+
