If oil prices were down, then the contract would show a gain, but then you still have a downfall, but in the revenue side (less cash coming in the door). One side up, one side down, that's how it works.

Looking at their recent 6-K report, seems majority of hedging wears off mid year 2018. Seems a short term blip, hopefully second half improves. Folks like hedging when prices go down, criticize when prices go up. Whole idea is to lock in a known price, not bet against commodity price moves. Usually the mark to market is compensated in the opposite direction by the actual commodity pricing and cash coming in the door. Does seem the spread widening screwed things up.

In Q4 2017 we lost over $600MM due to hedging losses. One analyst at National Bank estimates 2018 hedging losses at $840MM. Well done management.

The hedging loses are public. They were in the year end report. It’s no secret.

The company publically releases hedging information and as it stands compared to industry peers we did some really bad deals late last year that are costing us millions of dollars.

What about a screen on employees who lose billions in market cap by making a bad acquisition deal or a substandard hedging deal losing the company hundreds of millions of dollars? Nah, that would actually add shareholder value.

Cve should still run a screen on their it systems to see if folks are using company resources to complain on the internet. Then fire them for mis-use of resources..

He mentioned he reads this site (and was shocked by the comments) and if anyone doesnt like being at Cenovus they should come talk to him about a package.

Believe me I would if there was a job that pays what mine does at Cenovus. Next market upswing and this joint will clear out fast.
