Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Do we have a similar situation?

IBM has laid off 20,000 US employees over 40 years of age over the past five years... What about us? Any age discrimination?

These talks about NFW, WFH, entitlement, etc. are biased. The attendance for this website is composed primarily of people that are worried about, or interested in, layoffs. Employees that fit such categories are working in projects at risk or demotivated. However, there are many busy projects going on, where there is no NFW, WFH, dentist, etc. It was not long ago that people were jumping off buildings in QC. Company was famous for overworking its employees and complains were widespread.

If you are a low performer and at or past retirement age, then two strikes against you. If you are a high performer and at or past retirement age, you are likely to be bypassed for a headcount reduction, as I have been for several years. This is my first opportunity to have Qualcomm offer a voluntary retirement and I applaud it. Much like companies in the ‘70’s thru ‘90’s used to do. I see this as a “thank you for time served” rather than age discrimination. Benefits are so much better now than they were 40 years ago, but the younger generations feel that they are entitled to free lunches, WFH, unlimited personal time off, etc.

Turn it around, if you owned a company would you be willing to pay your employees your salary for the hours you put in and accept the WFH, NFW, personal time off that Qualcomm has been willing to accept? I for one would not.

If you hired a contractor to work on your house would you just accept NFW, doctor’s appointment, vacation, personal time off while they were doing a job for you?

The Current employee attitude of entitlement is one of the issues that Qualcomm has been mismanaging that is bringing the company to it’s present condition. Maybe a Broadcom performance-based criteria is needed to weed out the non-performers and truly reward the high performers.

Qualcomm has had a QTL money printing press up until recently to support the R&D and perks it allows employees to experience. If you are unhappy with the severance or current working conditions, time to move on and see if the grass is truly greener for you elsewhere...

I am not HR, management, but an engineer working in the trenches..

Why would they give out a list of affected people?

For those of you on the list, you'll (by law) be given a list of all people in your department affected (just title and age). You'll notice lots of older people. They're generally the volunteers taking the package and retiring.

So before you whimpy social justice warriors get your panties in a bunch, realize this is essentially generosity instead of discrimination.
