Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Are they giving up on filling all of these open positions in the stores?

We've had open positions for every department in our store. A neighboring store is in a similar predicament. We are short on home appliances, home improvement, store support, softlines. Most of these positions have been open for months.

Our softlines supervisor position has been open for close to six months. The store support lead position just opened up and it's probably going to go unfilled for several months. Therefore, the only managers in our building is the store manager and hardlines supervisor. Three associates have been given key carrier privileges to open/close the store and work the cash room for drops and loans since there isn't management coverage.

Is this intentional by way of not taking any action to fill these positions to save money? Are other stores out there stuck with too many unfilled positions?

"Why work for Sears for minimum wage when i can go next door and work for at least .50-$1 more, with more hours and not having to worry about my store closing every three months."

This says it all. SHC should be paying more per hour than the competitors to make up for the fact all these jobs are temporary and have no potential for advancement. I don't know how Sears/Kmart are able to keep employees. But then it's the same with customers. Why buy from Sears and risk not being able to get parts/service in the future? Everybody flees the sinking ship.

Some of the positions are being saved by ASM for their friends or family who don't work anyways

Is no one applying or are they just not bringing anyone in to interview...?

Ironically it wasn't hard for my closing store to attract and hire some new folks to help out for our last few months of existence...

Word is out that SHC doesnt pay as much as other retailers and that SHC doesnt pay as much commission without the hassle and B.S.that you have to deal with. SHC has ruined their reputation in the business world and with anyone who wants to work or be a salesperson.

Our Sears store is in a metropolitan area in California and the reason our positions are unfilled is because nobody applies. We have signs, posters, and banners everywhere but still no one applies. Minimum wage here is $11 an hour and all the other retailers are paying $12 to $13 an hour to start and all the employee has to do is fold clothes and other assorted tasks. They don't have to put up with the harassment of metrics, credit, and SYW.

I went to my local Sears store in Palmdale. There were several signs advertising commision only positions in appliances and mattresses. There were not very many people in the store. How can they sell anything if there are no customers.

I know there were a couple new hires in my store so far this year, FWIW. It has been difficult to fill positions at an infamously-dying brand. Many stores put out signs/flyers last fall to try to attract applicants, without much success.

Its hard to say in my area the positions that have been opened have been filled internally, but I think the only reason its been filled internally were the timings. Its hard to get an ok job outside and the 2 positions that were filled recently are a little bit better pay (nothing major I can assure), but I would say because we live in a rural area is the reason. Now we have a new position opened and it seems it will be filled again internally again as it seems (unless SM doesnt like the person so he wont get the position).

I think the reason in your area the positions arent filled might be because its not worth the headache and they know its not worth the pay. Than again who knows maybe the the SM is trying to save money, but in my store its in benefit for my SM to get others to fill those positions because its less work for him since he makes the people below him like

ASM/Supervisors/Leads/Coordinators

do all his work.
