Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Who decides who gets laid off?

I'm just wondering, because whoever it is, he/she is an idiot. We have lost some of our best people today.

Why? Why would you lay of some of your best performers? Some of your most experienced workers?

This makes absolutely no sense to me. I just know that with them gone, my work just became much harder.

I am glad I got out . As a manager, I had to figure out who was going to be RAed. Tough one as I befriended many of the hard working folks... I do not miss the sleepless nights. Recommend everyone look for other jobs . Layoffs are now imbedded into each quarter.

Over half of my organization is gone. They cut the best. Those of us who are left can’t possibly keep the business going so I guess we will all be cut next time.

As a former manager for 15+ of my 36 yr IBM career - and member of RA Class of 2017 - I can tell you it’s all a numbers game. Your told by your BU exec how many you need to let go, and figure it out from there. Skills don’t enter into it at the BUE level. First-line managers then need to figure out how to compartmentalize it so it can be ‘justified’. Then they need to figure out where the work goes because no matter what you’re told, it never really goes away. I can’t say that I really miss it and am much happier in my second career.

I would bet he can powerpoint and nod his head in agreement with the best of them. His day is coming.

A few weeks ago the VP of our industry group told us two things in a “Meet the team Session”:

1, if you don’t want to be here, leave the company.

2, The next few weeks will be difficult, but you’ll get through it

After building moral, he then proceeded to tell us a story of when he was a younger sales rep. As he walked through the customers huge data center, he asked what kind of computer that was. The customer responded, “That’s the air conditioner.”

This is the problem with IBM. We have people of this caliber deciding the technical talent does not have the skills to get IBM to the next level... what a joke..
