Thread regarding Southwestern Energy Co. layoffs

Sell the Company to Walmart

Cheap gas and too much. Stock price reflects a sad sad story. Sell SWN to AR-based Walmart. The fit would be nice because SWN began in AR, as well. Further, some SWN people could be door greeters, unless SWN’s 50 and over folks were already let go.

You failed to train the cupcake millennial who cost the company a couple million. No wonder they got rid of you.

In 2015 I trained a cupcake millennial and watched him continually do bad analyses that cost SWN a few million. They kept him and kicked me to the curb. Yes, I made more money than he did but SWN got what they were willing to pay for. I'm sure trophies and participation medals were given out.

They did target some older people who were close to retirement with OPTIONAL packages. Of the people I knew who were given options, a few turned it down, while one took it. Not long after came the massive layoff where both the younger and older generations were hit hard.

Yeah, you’re right. When I was hearing the CEO answer questions, it must have been my imagination.

Come on folks! Age has nothing to do with it. If you’re particularly good at your job (and performing reach arounds), then your chances of being retained are exponentially greater.

It’s good to hear SWN kept some 50 year-olds around, but I remember the former CEO mention in a townhall meeting that SWN was targeting 60 + folks with a package. I believe the comment at the time was premature and unexpected, but a layoff question was presented to him, so he answered it.

There is no need to be hostile or wish bad karma for somebody stating facts. There were many people let go in 2016, many were young and many were old. There are age discrimination laws to prevent the targeting of older employees and there is no doubt SWN had their ducks in a row to ensure they didn't violate any of those laws. If you feel otherwise, I suggest speaking to a lawyer and maybe they can bring you peace of mind when they explain to you that there is no basis for age discrimination in this case. I'm sorry you were laid off and I wish you the best.

Lost a lot of good workers in 2016, but there were plenty of youngsters let go and there are still plenty of oldsters around.

The truth is that there were older SWN people who trained their younger replacements, then were reassigned to a different position, then laid off during the great layoff of 2016 (in that order). Possessing years of experience was not valued at SWN. Years of dedication meant nothing.

50 and overs at SWN were put out on the ice and pushed off to the ocean long ago.
