Thread regarding IBM layoffs

More layoffs next week?

Are we having more layoffs next week? This week has been so strange at the office, like we were in a waiting pattern, I just couldn't figure out what exactly we were waiting for.

The only thing that comes to mind is more layoffs. I hope I am wrong though. Anybody knows if anything has been announced for the following week?

With thousands less employees you don't need as many middle managers. In my mind they've hung on far too long and it's only right to remove them. You don't need a manager for 2 or 3 people.

Great. Dave is back. And I thought things couldn't get any worse.

@3qcd We've lost a few middle management people plus a DE in the past few months. In all cases, they up and vanished with no warning. Then either our managers called department meetings to tell us they're gone, or an upper line called an all hands to inform us. That certainly doesn't sound like voluntary resignations.

There are definitely cuts going on at the middle manager level, no matter what people say. It's the very upper levels that aren't getting cut, probably because they decide how many heads get chopped and they're not going to axe themselves.

Either that or there's a convenient string of middle-level people randomly vanishing with either no warning or very shaky excuses. That seems like way too big a coincidence to me to be the case.

I have seen several managers and leads resigning unexpectedly over the last few months.

There has to be more to the story than the reasons they gave for resigning. (out of the blue)

End of June . IBM is ramping up for another quarter which is not looking good. Think quarters folks.

Well last week in my org, management gave a big push about taking advantage of internal learning to improve skills. I wouldn't be surprised if they claimed last week's push was a proper warning before RAing people on the list this week.

The same manager who was correct in all information relayed to me about the end of March RA said there was to be another following it by two weeks or so, at least in the US.

Everyone is always in a waiting pattern in IBM. Everyone has been trained that way with the constant, constant RAs. The threat is always hanging over everyone. It's a horrible way to work and try to be productive. It's a horrible way to treat people. I'm SO happy I'm gone.

In past years, except in 2017 because there was a suicide at the IBM head office and a budgeting issue that stopped it, there would be a layoffs in Canada shortly after layoffs in the US. I created a thread here asking about any layoffs in Canada and so far there has only been one reply saying that some remote support people were laid off in maintenance, and no other replies. This would suggest that there will still be layoffs coming to Canada, and that is reinforced by the fact that we were told our business unit was given a quota of people to get rid of, which they accomplished using the voluntary path to retirement program and therefore did not have to do layoffs
