Thread regarding Verizon Wireless layoffs

Praise the Sun! I'm on vacation!

F**K Verizon.

10 year SM, with a near perfect attendance record, and asked multiple times over the years to apply for _ GM position, but didn't because I was waiting for one with a commute I would be okay with, and well.... gtfo.

At least I'm getting a severance check. Now that I am no longer employed, I can say that the SM position is arguably the most difficult, stressful, and thankless position in the Retail channel. I never signed up to do 2 people's worth of work, but that's how its been for the last year, and despite all of that I still managed to get all my responsibilities addressed. Honestly, I feel like a giant weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

It s---s for everyone else though, especially the ones who actually liked their jobs. But hey, it was a business move that really started with the mass CSS/ES layoffs October of 16.

I'm sure there will never be a tally, but in 18 months, entire positions, and 20%(?) of another one were kicked to the curb like trash so that the big V could pay for:

New t-shirts

New stores (in retrospect that seems pretty wasteful)

Yahoo?

AOL??

"virtual shares you can't have for 2 years"

Oh, and they stopped donating old phones to Hopeline because they weren't making money off it.

Just think, When the tax breaks came, AT&T gave their people, who are still employed, $1000 cash.

Verizon gave their team $2,500 in monopoly money that could only turn into real money if said employee was around in 2 years.... and then fired a whole bunch of those people today I think the prorated amount for all of us is like $12.

I think next year for the Superbowl, CWA needs to have a commercial that looks just like the warm and fuzzy one Verizon had, but calls out their biannual human fire sales.

It's nice that Verizon cares about random police officers, and firefighters, it really is. It's just a shame they don't care about the people that make Verizon function.

If you are currently employed and reading this, you really need to look into unionizing. No, the union can't get you more money for less work, or a unicorn, or really anything more than what you already have, but it's very difficult for Verizon to shut down a union store or arbitrarily lay off random union employees. paying the dues s---s, but I bet your fallen comrades would rather have been contributing 2% and still be employed, than being on indeed.com right now.

Let me say this..layoffs happen. However, Verizon is the only company that I’ve heard of that doesn’t value tenure. Usually, the last one hired is the first one fired. Not the case at VZW. It’s unfortunate that an SM with less than a year experience gets to stay employed but a 10yr plus employee gets the cut. That’s the most hurtful part of it all because you’ve invested a big part of your life in a company you loved and they say too bad. Shame on Verizon!

This post makes it clear why you were let go instead of one of your counterparts, spiteful, vindictive, and completely worried about how you can hurt someone who hurt you first. Best of luck, bye

Unionizing makes it hard to close a store? Ask the reps in Everett,MA. They unionized the company closed the store 12 months later due to “a leasing issue”. A union will not solve anyone’s problems.

It all started was before 2016. B2B ops and marketing got beat up multiple times from 2013-2015 with layoffs. I’m sure other departments before that.

But it can be the best thing that ever happened to you.

I'm pretty certain you will still get your stock if you are laid off...they made that pretty clear.

Manager's can unionize as well, but I don't think the OP was just referring to SMs.

You do know unions are only for sales reps and not managers right? Genius.

you make a good point about those shares... that's going to be hard to not look at as blood money when the cashout comes in 2 years.
