Thread regarding Sam's Club layoffs

To the folks in clubs already running 3rd party wireless, hows it working out?

Tech lead here. How has the change affected the rest of the technology department? My market has no set time frame for when they will come to us yet, but got the news that it will be happening.

Have electronics and photo (if you still have photo) been allotted more hours to help with coverage? In my club, we're only able to have single coverage for electronics which is 1 person between 9am-9:30pm (not much overlap between opener/closer). Additionally, we only have a photo associate from 10-6 every day.

My wireless associates are constantly assisting electronics when it comes to taking care of members, working electronics pallets every day, and covering breaks and lunches on the door and in photo. I feel like cutting wireless without extra help in electronics is really going to put a strain on the department. How is everyone coping with it?

Also, semi-related, overnight doesn't touch electronics, so its up to the day crew to keep it stocked and put out new items. Is it this way everywhere else?

We have had smart circle in our club for a very short time. They seem to be more concerned about directv. The one person told me that someone else will be taking over in a week. Members are already getting irritated when they walk in the door and get harassed.

3rd party has been in our store for a few months now. And let's just say, it's a huge mistake. New associates manning the counter daily. Never the same one. Not to mention, since they have taken over, weve keyed out over $20,000 in missing phones.....

Tech team lead will still be a lead position and so far should be the same title. Try may put tech leads in charge of hardlines in addition to their current duties like it was before the tech lead position was put in place.

Also don’t get hung up on titles. Most clubs a lead is a lead regardless of their area. They are scheduled out to overlap the other floor leads so you’ve never just been a tech lead anyways.

I don't see tech lead going anywhere. Between mobile accessories, electronics, office supplies, etc, there are so many different items to manage and keep track of. Wireless used to be third party years ago, and the tech lead position was actually implemented during that time.

Your market probably does have a timeline as all timelines have been set as of a week ago. This move started a year ago with 3 testers for the pilot program. Back in Feb I posted about these changes, briefly and vaguely on this site, because it was still confidential.

As for photo, most photo departments are going away. Many more we’re going on I’ll clubs saw photo was not in their remodel plans and questioned it (slip on the companies part as they didn’t want to notify anyone of this change yet). There will only be a very select few that will stay (and for how long is not known).

As for wireless, if you are full time you have the option for severance regardless of what anyone says. If you are FT and have no plans on staying the delete all your career preference (current and future). Some markets have been using your current preferences to offer jobs at the time they notify a position is being cut. If they offer you a position in your career preferences and you decline, some markets have been using this to void severance (not saying it’s right or within policy but that’s what’s been happening).

The setup for wireless is the same as when clubs closed. Two month employment from the date of notice. You should be asked if you will stay two weeks of your two months to help train. Pay to train should be in addition to the 2 months pay based off your last 2 months avg but is not overtime unless you exceed 40 workable hours a week during the two weeks you are training.

All wireless kiosk should be converted no later than October (or a few weeks before iPhones next launch which ever comes first).

So basically that is what’s going on. I backed off posting on this site because I am one of very few who know about this and didn’t want to give myself away but a lot of people on here poked fun and played it off as troll or fake post. For those who did that, here it is, just as I said starting back in February (just as I said it would) and moving more rapidly in the past month.

As for PT associates, unfortunately severance is not a benefit offered to PTers. FTs make your choice now and quickly. You will need to withdrawal all your career preference options before they pull them (which will be the day before they tell you if they plan on being sneaky). Print off our severance policy and print off you preferences after you clear them for your records. Also remember our ethics Deparment phone numbers and any contact info Incase markets decide to be sneaky about severance offers. Not saying they will but protect yourself.

Good luck to all of you. We all knew when device payments were the new thing for all carriers except us cellular that kioks would become less profitable and we knew when the TSMs were let go that the kioks would become even more less profitable even though we knew some GMs were ignoring TSMs wishes and advices.

Have had 3rd party wireless in store for about 2 months now, at the time had 1 full-time 1 part time wireless associate. Wasn't a big change but I did have to cut some hours away from my part time electronics associate to make room for my full-time wireless. Unsure if they will keep him in the area. We also have photo 10 to 630 daily even though our demand hours call for at least 80 hours till the end of the year. I've never had a night crew able to stock much of anything besides office, I schedule my full time tech 230 to 11 so he is able to stock outs and batteries, if he isn't there it's all on me.

The most frustrating thing has been still answering basic questions about warp or having to still maintain inventory on accessories and phones. Smart circle is hit our miss on their reps, I've had 1 termed for having members basically use warp to activate their own phone while helping another member.

No 3rd party here just yet but the last part is true for my club too. Used to have a good overnight staff and they would spare someone to do the hot items but now they dont even do our picks. Also life is so much better without a photo dept.
