The same people who still wonder about overtime pay on holidays dont even realize the post office delivers packages now on sunday.

Wake up. This goes on at other places for hourly employees also. Its a good thing also It means America is more secular. About time.

Truth is there are a lot of people all over the world who dont get that anymore and are willing to work it for less. Sorry thats just the way the cookie crumbles.

We disagree on several points. This is not "the rest of the world" , we are the USA , and we should not be like the rest of the world. It's why people come here from all over the world.

Most holidays that are paid holiday time are secular , grow up .

The same people who still wonder about overtime pay on holidays don't even realize the post office delivers packages now on Sunday. The USPS pays overtime for that Sunday work and is now a mostly privatized business

Kmart stores in Hawaii have been open on Christmas Day for nearly 20 years. Also some Kmart store managers on the mainland have brought in volunteer Christmas Day recovery crews, so the possibility of getting over time on Christmas Day is not completely impossible.

In union grocery stores in CA holiday pay is triple time. Sears employees need to look at the compensation of other retailers and consider applying, while you are still employed. Your unemployment with small pay is not worth waiting for.

@1ysn - Lots of employees working retail and in other sectors get incentivized for working holidays. I'm sure there are employers out there that don't incentivize worked holidays, but those employers are in the minority.

Kmart likely won't be around by Christmas anyway, so you don't have to worry about holiday pay!

Also, Kmart started opening on Thanksgiving in the early part of the 90's before they even carried much if any grocery items. Also, have you even seen the grocery section in a Kmart recently? Most of the brand name stuff is expired and the shelves are being padded with cheap dollar store crap like pasta and microwave popcorn.

It's normal for grocery-focused stores, such as Kmart, to be open on Thanksgiving Day until around dinnertime. People need somewhere to buy their last-minute meal ingredients. They and many other grocery-selling stores of all sizes have been doing this for decades. The controversial 'stores being open on Thanksgiving' thing that started in the last 10 years or so is non-grocery stores pushing back their "Black Friday" opening times for holiday gift sales shopping from early Friday morning into Thursday night/evening and now even Thursday afternoon, conflicting with traditional 'Thanksgiving dinner' times for more workers and shoppers.

@1vrm- I think it was Kmart that started the tradition of being open on Thanksgiving. I wouldn't doubt it if they decide to be the first to open on Christmas in a (futile) attempt to increase sales.

What's really a joke is that Kmart is always closed on Christmas so really, you will only get Thanksgiving from now on.

I work in a multi cultural store & the Jewish people & Muslims appreciate these holidays too. Jewish employees have volunteered to work Easter, which is not considered for holiday pay s their devout coworkers can have the day off. No matter what your faith is, when most everyone else in your family has the day off, it’s nice to spend time with them. We don’t complain either when they want their special days off.

It doesn't surprise me that Sears and Kmart did this. Even when they were paying time and a half or holiday pay especially during thanksgiving, that "extra money" is gone because you schedule you an extra day off, or they scale your hours back the following week.

1xat - This sounds like some lame excuse some higher-up would come up with to justify taking away holiday pay. The higher-ups at Hoffman Estates never have to work a holiday (keep in mind I am directing this at the senior managers and the excecutives, not the "worker bees" working below them at headquarters) so they don't know how it feels to have that opportunity to enjoy a holiday denied.

For most, holidays are one of the few chances employees get to be with their families or friends, and if they "have" to work one of those holidays for whatever arbitrary reason, it's common courtesy to reward them for doing so. It's a crying shame that they will continue to expect us to be available for ALL of the holidays and at the same time, will no longer make it up to us for "sitting out" those holidays.

It wouldn't be as bad if they didn't require the "all hands on deck" nonsense and asked for employees willing to volunteer to work the holiday. I can't remember when we actually needed "all hands on deck", even for Thanksgiving evening and Black Friday. As for the 4th of July, it's dead anyways. Three or four people could easily run the entire store at most Sears or Kmarts on the 4th.

As multicultural as our society has become, holidays really aren't appropriate anymore. If you are jewish, Hindu or Muslim (or atheist), celebrating xmas might feel like a slap in the face. Thanksgiving can be celebrated in your home any or every day. And go ahead and shoot off that bottle rocket some time in june. Loosen up and any/everyday is a holiday! It's all in your mind.

The previous poster is correct. Accepting or expecting overtime for working a holiday smacks of double dipping.

Well if you're working it's not really a holiday. You can't grill out, for example, on July 4th if you are ringing up customers. So it's like any other day. You need to change your mindset or just not work that day or work elsewhere. You do have choices when companies are clamoring for employees.
