Thread regarding Weatherford International Ltd. layoffs

If laid off, do you get reimbursed for unused vacations?

Does anyone know if Weatherford reimburses employees it is layoff for their unused vacations? And vice versa, does negative vacation balance get deducted from the severance package?

Thanks

I took 2 months vacation and on the 3rd of Jan got laid off. I still had on the books. 187 hrs on the books. My schedule was such I couldn't take vacation and when I did the one year around Christmas I had to cancel and fly overseas for an emergency

Should have taken them to court

Yea it was a big surprise when they told me the day I was RIFd after 20 years of service I was loosing all my accrued vacation. When you read the post of all the pay outs for the sorry execs that have passed thru the organization over the years it really puts the icing on the cake of why Wft is we’re it is today.

In the US, Weatherford did away with paying out vacation upon termination in 2016. This was done for several reason, however the primary was to allow them to stop accruing the essential liability. Think several thousand employees with several weeks paid vacation each that you have tied up to cover.

The way they went about it was in usual WFT fashion done poorly in many peoples view as they made the announcement and it became a use it or loose it situation. In the US there were a lot of folks that had maxed out vacation as well as the ability to carry over several weeks from the previous year. Myself for example I had about 8 weeks paid vacation owed to me that I had to use. Time this with massive layoffs and in my case, I needed to be at work to keep things moving for my team but had to use vacation or loose what was owed to me. It ended up being a case of taking a day every week off as well as maxing time around holidays and towards the end of the year I was working only a day or two a week. I still lost some of the time owed me.

As stated in another post, certain States in the US had specific rules that prevented this although there were other policy changes that were put in to address some of that going forward as well.

In the US, you do NOT get paid for unused vacation time...Unless you live in a state that requires it. I don't know which states those are. You DO get a negative balance deducted from your last paycheck.
