Thread regarding Bank of America layoffs

Voluntary layoffs

While not universally true, a lot of middle aged workers with many years at the bank would love to get the severance package as a bridge to early retirement or ease the transition to something new. Some managers are supportive and help that happen, fulfilling the quota with people who want to leave rather than with those who want to stay.

Just wondering, how exactly do you approach your manager if you want to let them know you would like to be put on the next layoffs list? I wouldn't mind doing that, but it seams really risky to me.

For legal reasons, a manager can’t ever ask you if you want to be on the volunteer list. I know many managers who keep that list in mind when cuts are required. So if you’re thinking about it, talk to your manager. Let them know your timeline. Believe me, everyone is happier when someone volunteers.

It's not easy to say but you just have to be honest and tell a few leaders that in your particular situation it may not be a bad thing and you'd be open to discussing it. Planning on retiring in the next couple of years would be the obvious reason for a request without raising much of a negative reaction. And I said a couple of leaders because it helps to have a few allies on your side; some will be more helpful than others.

Just say the truth. You'd rather move on to find a job that fits your career goals, but not saying you want to leave. In addition, you'd rather be the one over someone else on your team that's in line with their goals.
