dumb post....clearly OP intended to start a comment war between young and old. Of course there are bratty millenials and those who actually work hard and bring good ideas to the table, just as there are old-fart dinosaurs who complain about everything if its not done the way "it used to be" and older veteran employees who still kick butt and provide good leadership....

Countries have started putting padding around streetlight poles because Millennials can't stop walking into them while they gaping at their phones.

True story.

There are certainly good and bad examples at both ends of the age/service spectrum. On the network side (at least in GTE) when I joined there were lots of old-timers who saw no need to change anything: long distance calls would remain a cash-cow , wireless was very much a niche for those with too much money and would never catch on, and the internet was a fad. And some were much quicker to embrace changes and transfer their expertise to the new world. On the other side, new hires too sure about everything.

So, more the individual than the group IMO.

(And customers too. I worked with universities/colleges who had made a good amount of money reselling overpriced phone plans for dorms. Suddenly students started coming in with their cell phones and didn't need the plans. Many of these customers were blindsided....)

@1lcs/@1rfl, it is very difficult to read your written communications. There's no cohesiveness to the words you choose. It's very choppy. Perhaps some writing courses would be of value.

Also, it's a bad idea to show your age bias by labeling others dinosaurs, and pinning your speedy career implosion on everyone and everything but yourself. Maybe your ideas s---ed, or were tried earlier and were proven disastrous?

Buy a mirror. Self-awareness is a most important trait.

I made the same mistakes when I was new. I thought I had the greatest of ideas. With time came wisdom, and with that wisdom the realization that generations of historical knowledge trumped my hasty ideas on most occasions.

Now, having learned from my earlier mistakes, when starting a job in a new environment, rather than be an abrasive upstart, I take the time to immerse myself in the environment, to learn things, before I consider opening my mouth and telling seasoned people how I think things could be done better. I still shake my head when I think of my hubris, and how insulting it likely was to those around me.

Best of luck.

I don't blame my shortcomings. I am glad I got my severance. I rather be unemployed that work at this place. Since I left my position, my old manager ended up in the hospital for an infection and had to perform emergency surgery due to an infection 4 weeks ago right before the most recent RIF in June. No thank you my health is more important. Guess what guys. He used his vacation days while he was at the hospital and didn't take short term disability because hes afraid hes gonna lose his job. He was back at work 2 weeks after he enter the ER. In the past, people take 12 weeks off and use the short term disability. He wasn't the only one in our department that went to the hospital for emergency surgery there were few others.

You can say whatever you what about my entitlement and stuff. I am glad I got the trophy of RIF Nov 2017. My life and mental health is more important than my job at Verizon.

I feel sorry for you guys that have no place to go after Verizon. But I just want to remind everyone there is life after this place.

Wishing you the best.

As a boomer, and the proud parent of a Gen-x'r I haven't quite figured out, I'm excited for the millennial. A real different way of thinking. Turning the status quo upside down. Making tons of cash sitting home blogging, vlogging, and playing video games on line with a donation based video following. I am amazed at how creative they are generating a revenue stream. I hope they all save for retirement because job security isn't what it used to be. They will need to save on their own, plan on their own. But they would be no worse at the helm than older, good ole boy network fat cats.

I gotta laugh at the comments below. We have all these dinosaurs lying around to pretending to do work. The comments below shows the true work environment of Verizon where the old people who have 20+ years of service pretending really hard by web surfing for 10 hours a day and leaving the office after their directors and managers. Really Hard Work Guys.

Then when a millennials tries to do something cool or innovative. These so called experience dinosaurs will sabotage this idea cause it will prove these dinosaurs worthless. They will complain and whine. Take your computer away so you can't do your job.

I was RIF in November 2017 and put 4.5 years at the company. FYI, I found another job right away and got payed more. I used the severance for a vacation. It was the best thing ever happen to me in my entire life. When I was at Verizon these so called senior managers will sabotage my work when I tried to work on something new. Let alone harass and micromanage me as well as talk trash behind my back preventing me from getting a promotion. I am so glad they are doing these layoffs. Its the best way to remove these people that will they truly know how it feels to really work than web surf 10 hours a day.
