If the letter and agreement differ, that right there is a reason to litigate. I wouldn't consider 10 years of UNH stock profits a waste, I've made quite a nice stash. If these 3 HR folks are unethical, why hasn't anyone reported it? Mine was a mass layoff, so I doubt this came into play. Also, other folks from my layoff have since been rehired.

I was laid off last year, so I've already gone through this process. As far as unemployment is concerned, you will be eligible once your severance period runs out. For example, if you receive four months of severance and your first day not on the UHG payroll is July 6, you will be eligible to receive unemployment benefits effective Nov 6. Hopefully, you'll have a new gig by then and not need UI.

Continuing the example, the first day you can send HR your signed severance agreement is July 6. On this date, a mandatory 21 day waiting period begins before HR can start to process the severance payment. You would receive the payment on the first regular UHG pay day after severance pay processing is complete. In other words, it could be as long as 6 weeks from the date HR receives the signed severance agreement until you see severance pay credited to your bank account. But for UI eligibility purposes, the 4 month clock starts the day after your employment ends (July 6), not the day you receive your severance payment (as late mid or end of Aug).
