Question on Med Insurance under COBRA

Question to anyone who had been laid-off and availed of COBRA Med insurance. Assuming you are married and no kids, how much does COBRA cost ?

I did some calculations looking at the last W2 Box 12C code DD, it costs the company approx $12K for the whole year. Then looking at my paycheck approx $120 is deducted from my income every payday. Since we get paid bi-weekly that would mean $120 x 26 = approx $3K. All in all company and employee pay 12K + 3K = 15K for the year. Thus if you elect to continue with COBRA med insurance, cost per month looks to be 15K / 12 months = $1,250 per month.

Is this the expected amount to pay for COBRA when one gets laid-off ?

Your calculations are correct. As another already mentioned, when we went on strike COBRA info we were given was something like 12k for single up to about 18k for family. You might find cheaper coverage that fits your needs by shopping around.

I just got laid off back in May and I can confirm that as part of my severance package, my Cobra coverage is being paid for by Verizon based on my time at Verizon at 2 weeks per year. It will cover medical, vision, and dental at no charge for my severance period. It won’t cover health care spending accounts but will subsidize that cost. I had the spending account and it will be around $70 a month for me to continue that. You should have gotten paperwork from benefits department confirming your cobra benefits a couple of weeks or so after your last day on payroll and not your last day in the store or office. Good luck to original poster and anyone else that was laid off.

Remember Verizon pays for your coverage 2weeks per year worked if you were laid off.

Keep in mind that this is for 'medical' coverage only. This does not cover vision, dental and prescription I believe. But sure to ask all appropriate questions related to coverage you and family need.

I’m sorry to say, OP, but yes, it’s expensive. Someone downthread mentioned approximately $600/Mo for a single person. When we were on strike in 2016, I remember it being close to that amount for me. It is not cheap.

Best of luck in your new career.

COBRA contains provisions giving certain former employees, retirees, spouses former spouses, and dependent children the right to temporary continuation of health coverage at group rates. This coverage, however, is only available when coverage is lost due to certain specific events. Group health coverage for COBRA participants is usually more expensive than health coverage for active employees, since usually the employer pays a part of the premium for active employees while COBRA participants generally pay the entire premium themselves. COBRA applies to plans maintained by private-sector employers and sponsored by most state and local governments. Beneficiaries may be required to pay for COBRA coverage. For qualified beneficiaries receiving the 11 month disability extension of coverage, the premium for those additional months may be increased to 150 percent of the plan's total cost of coverage.

Yes, you will pay the entire cost of your coverage. I did this several years ago and was covering me and my spouse for about $1K per month.
