Tutu Park Kmart reopens after $10 million makeover

ST. THOMAS — At least 100 eager shoppers waited at the doors Friday morning for the reopening of Kmart in Tutu Park Mall. Within minutes, every aisle was overflowing with customers piling household goods, TVs, furniture, clothing and other needed items into already filled carts.

So all bad news is real and all good news is a PR stunt. OK I got it now. Thanks!

Wow. So they have customers in a store halfway around the world because there is no where else to shop....woohoo, what a game changer! All your jobs are saved!

The Virgin Islands is in the wrong direction for this (Caribbean vs Pacific), but I just realized that Guam is actually twice as far from the mainland US than it is from Australia. So when the US Kmart brand eventually dies, I could see SHC selling off the fully-operational Guam mega-Kmart to the successful separately-owned Australian Kmart company. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kmart_Australia

To everyone who keeps saying "insurance money paid for the store", you do realize that SHC is self insured. Which means that SHC paid the money out of their own pocket which is Sears reinsurance company.

It's pretty much a PR stunt. Nothing more. Don't get your hopes up so called Kmart revival morons. Also if they fix up the joint then they can have a better chance to sell the property.

Even if it was insurance money there was a deductible, again, why rebuild a store only to close it on January 1, 2019 (Shakes head).

"That is the future of Kmart. Small, isolated places where there is no other options."

Yes, this Virgin Islands store probably has a lot in common with the mega-Kmart on Guam.

Why did Eddie authorize $10 million if they are going BK on January 1, 2019? Unless the BK post is fake news? Sad! Are you really that simple? the 10 million was from an insurance payout for damage. -shakes head_

Paid for with insurance money, not investment capital.

This store was completely demolished by the Hurricane. That is the only reason the store was redone and were penny pinching at every turn.

LMAO, look at the Yelp reviews of the this store.

"I have come to categorize the K-mart here on island as a necessary evil...I go here for a lot of things but I hate that I have to go here for things, however if they weren't here, I would definitely be at a loss....a dysfunctional love-hate relationship that is oh-so-fitting to this island!! "

The same reason a one eyed, 12 fingered midget can get a boyfriend at the family reunion in small town Alabama.

One word

"Optionless"

I believe it is one of only a few big box stores on the island. One of the better performers.
