Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Request to leave early

QDT engineer here. Can anyone affected by earlier layoffs comment as to whether a "request to leave early" is likely to be approved? I understand this would allow starting a new job before the end of the notice period. (but would be after the last day of work).

Thanks

I volunteered to be part of the 2015 layoff. My date was at the end of Feb. 2016 so my severance was calculated to that date. I found a job in early Nov. and asked to be let go in the Nov. group. It was approved by a VP and I left with the Nov. group. I assumed my severance would be prorated, but I got the whole amount. I hope this helps.

According to the FAQ, you would give up your rights under the WARN act, and only your termination date would change. The severance package would still be given. That is IF it's approved. My question is, are they likely to approve such requests?

I heard the same thing. You could put in an early end date, so you could get the severance. Haven't heard a resolve.

Stopping payment is one thing, not getting severance is another. No severance would stink, but then people would just work around it.

you can leave but you're not getting your severance. qcom WANTS you to leave early, hence the torture tactics going on now

I think I know what you are asking. Let's say May 4 is the last day that you are supposed to report to work at Qualcomm, and you are getting paid through June 19 (because of the warn act). If you get a job offer to start a new job on June 1, you can ask Qualcomm for permission to start the new job on that date. But, if it is approrved, Qualcomm will then consider June 1 (not June 19) to be your Qualcomm termination date. Qualcomm won't pay you for the period from June 1 to June 19, but you could still start your new job on June 1 that way.
