Considering they're giving four week instead of the normal six week notices, it looks like this round was intended for 5/17. Someone here, at the time said the paperwork wasn't ready to go, so there would be a delay, and got a lot of grief for it. Either way, employees are off the books before July, which is what the leadership wanted. Another major layoff, exactly six months after the last one.

Risk will fall on the vendor now. Verizon will pay less for IT and wipe their hands of any responsibility. It is just business folks. Thanks for your service!!
After over a hundred EUS RIF's, hundreds more to be outsourced / rebadged, including several hundred VDSI. Several thousand IT development jobs to be outsourced by EOY. IT executives were in India last week to meet with outsourcing vendors.
I know from my former co-workers that most, if not all, IT OPS jobs are about gone in US for VZ. Their were two left in my group that were rifed and their job responsibility passed on to the application teams. Even VDSI (India) folks are worried their jobs are at risk. All these years we were heralded as keeping IT at high levels of availability and now they just wipe out the unit.
The experience level at Verizon is really being seriously reduced. You can not instantly manufacture 20 year experiencec IT techs and once they are gone the businss will suffer. Something VZ is will to risk on their customers.
There will be so many IT issues now it will be rediculous. Sorry for those affected. You will be better off.
OP is correct, original date was 5/17 and was related to IT, not retail. The volume of employees affected along with ongoing changes in outsourcing plans led to delay. Those let go today in IT are the lucky ones, most of those remaining will be outsourced. Several thousand impacted by end of 2018.
Retail was completely unscathed and 5/17 was supposed to be a "bloodbath." So I doubt that source knew anything.
