Any ideas how many have been laid off from IT today, company wide? Is this the major layoff that was supposed to happen last week but never materialized? Or is this completely unrelated?

Anyone over 40 should have the numbers in the OWPA report that should be provided in next day or so.
You mean the IT department which refused just about every internal request and forbid you from doing anything yourself? Good riddance. You are the architects of your own obsolescence.
I was let go. I have worked in It for 17 years. I was a MTS4 it IT. I actually told my boss a few months ago to put me on the list. I will end up with about 9 months of pay as my package. It was a great place to work for many years. I was in wireless IT & worked in EUS. I just figured it was time to go. Seems like anyone over 50 is on the chopping block. Also talk of outsourcing in the future.

Verizon loves to play hide and seek with the numbers, but I'm guessing it's in the thousands, like last time. (Around 16,000 in November.)
And that's not counting the employees who will be forced to become contractors or quit.
1qsp I'm sorry to hear this for you and the others here. Just totally spot on. Hopefully the certs will look good enough on a resume to get a door in somewhere else. So many others are in the same boat.
My entire team has been RIF'd today. (NY, FL, and CA)
Ironically two years ago today I was in Queens NY as a replacement strike worker and it was my last day. I went up there with enthusiasm and courage to perform a job during a difficult time. A year and half later I was rewarded by being rifed as a top performer with three freshly minted AWS certifications. Verizon does not care about veterans, poor little old ladies or cryimg babies, only their budget goals.
I heard 30% of IT today and saw 5-6 former co-workers I knew personally were rifed. All were MTS4 and above. I went down from the last rif as a personal vendetta but would have gone with this one anyway.
I heard 400 across the board. More to come.

When stalled at a juncture, the positive and worth awareness consider it a layover, and find no matching attributes, and hence no comfort. Only option is to shorten the delay and choose direction that satisfies capabilities.
