Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Oracle Culture

After reading countless posts, I have surmised that Oracle culture is not modeled for people who are driven by technology and innovation and the desire for excellence (Grade A). These good people are shown the door or leave on their own soon after they join.

Instead, Oracle culture is where Grade B thrives and Grade C survives.

I think that's why we are seeing so many layoffs. The company is trying hard to reinvent itself and it won't be possible unless they improve their peopIe, who in turn improve the products.

By the way, I am not passing judgement on anyone, it is just an observation. I consider myself Grade C (someone who does enough to survive in their role). I have been on the verge of layoffs twice and miraculously survived...

You are exactly right. Everything, and I mean everything that happens at this company, happens in support of a decision that was made for that one single reason - to make more mega-money for the hand-picked people at the top. Maybe it used to be different, but today this company does not care one bit about it's customer's or employees, it's all about white-washing the analysts and stockholders in an effort to prop up the stock price and sell that year's expiring options at a premium.

It's more specific than that. Oracle's culture is about making money for LE and a few of his hand picked friends. It is not about making money for stockholders or the company itself. If LE could get a short term bump in the stock price out of it, he'd be willing to set Oracle on a path of total self destruction. In fact, that is pretty much what he has done. These people are not stupid. They are trading away Oracle's future financial success for short term gains that they can personaly benefit from before they leave. And they are half way out the door already.

I disagree. Oracle has some really good people, but LE's personality infected the culture and the impact is now being seen (e.g. customers are fleeing after having been screwed over and profit margins are shrinking). Survival depends on whether one can thrive in a dog eat dog environment or survive/protected/sheltered by being in a group with other good people who create their own culture.

Unfortunately, the layoffs tend to drain the good talent as they find their own way out while increasing the concentration of a$$holes as they manage to manipulate the situation to their own advantage. A natural by-product is that many learn how to keep their heads down, do the minimum and wait things out as more reorganizations and cuts become inevitable. It is a downward spiral.
