Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Just received the first Sears mass-market mail advertisement in months, and it's for Sears gift cards!

No, it wasn't a multi-page circular ad like of times past, it was a single-page flyer advertising Sears gift cards for Father's Day, stuck in between the usual mass-market mailing of the weekly restaurant coupons and store circulars.

No mention of Craftsman tools, Kenmore grills, apparel or anything else. No mention of any sales or promotions, but just a Sears gift card.

Considering Sears doesn't advertise all that much these days, it seems to be such a waste to only advertise a gift card and nothing else. What about advertising actual merchandise and the current promotions which will draw customers into the store, which our competitors are doing?

Gift cards don't draw customers into the store. If this is the best our marketing masterminds can do, we're doomed.

Same reason they push the credit cards so hard. They get money from Citi for every application whether the people are approved or not. I always tell people that you can monitor how bad the company is doing by how many emails you get and how much they yell about credit apps. The more they yell the worse SHC is doing.

The reason you sell gift cards is you get cash up and when you go bankrupt the customer gets nothing ! Ye the customer gets screwed. Good work Eddie and Co.

Do Sears stores even consistently have products in them anymore to sell? The pictures I have seen make even the stores that are still open look like they could go out of business at a drop of a hat with such a poor selection of merchandise.

An ad for gift cards? Who does that... (Well, besides Sears apparently.)

Way to tell shoppers that they are the only thing you feel you have to draw them in. Why should they if you don't offer them anything they or friends/family might want to SPEND them on? Or is that the plan... push gift cards in hopes they'll be wasted upon the company folding.

Relative of mine mentioned they were buying new appliances for their new house and we're going to Sears. Had to school them that it wasn't 1986 anymore.

A number of studies have been done over the years with the results being that the majority of gift cards are never redeemed or used. Definitely a cash grab.

Pre BK cash grab. Most stores that are within 6 months of BK do this to get the cash.
