Thread regarding State Farm Insurance layoffs

Unionize State Farm

Former SIU Section Manager 24 years' experience

Trust me-I recognize your frustrations over what you all are experiencing regarding your mistreatment at State Farm. I semi-retired recently as a result of the treatment of employees at all levels.

State Farm is not afraid of litigation, what they are afraid of is an organized employee base; the best way to organize is through a union. As a former member of management, I personally know State Farm is terrified of unions.

I am currently exploring the concept of attempting to organize an Office and Professional Workers union at State Farm to protect your interests.

State Farm is playing games with your future. They tell you not to work overtime but know full well you have to work off the books in order to fulfill the obligations of your role.

Let me help protect you; respond to this blog with your interest. Spread the word among your colleagues. If enough support exists, I will move this forward and set up a union interest campaign at an operations center.

The union crowd, and the class action crowd are commenting again on threads over 6 years old. Expecting somebody else to care enough to do what they don't have the wherewithal to attempt themselves.

Please help. 23 years and it only gets worse. The Estimatics numbers are stressed knowing's that it is not regularly possible unless quality is sacrificed.
Union needed fast! The truth is I have been more and more stressed increasingly week by week for more than a decade, but never thought about a union. This is likely why there are not a lot of responses. 95% of the workers I speak with feel the same way and this is all over the country, not just my area. Not many think of a union.
SF has become an evil company and does not care about workers. Bottom line and Managment fat pockets is their mission.

HELP!

"Can you expand? I know some directors are over in india right now.

Looking forward to giving my notice in a couple weeks."

Unless you have a new job lined up do not quit. Heck, even if you do have a new one, work both if you can. And by working your SF job, COOOAAAST. Don't let your pride force you to forgo unemployment and any possible severance. You might get s-----d out of severance but don't walk away from UI.

It is definitely a company that needs to be unionized, but anyone who tries will be out the door. It is way too big and getting enough people to participate outside work hours would be a near impossible task. The only chance would be an existing union that has the ambition and wallet capable of absorbing the workforce of by far the largest and most monstrous insurance company in the world. If anyone was up for it, I would sign a card today. The consolation prize is, if someone did succeed, all the other Insurance companies would soon follow. If you are out there, please help us.

A company that treats their employees this bad needs a union.

Of course not. Someone has to be willing to be the first, and that means making yourself a target. Based on the likes of other unionizing companies, that means you will be fired for spurious reasons.

Most people, and I include myself in this, aren't willing to be the first.

Are you still with SF? I most definitely would join or help unionize SF! My friends and family are getting paid way more than me and I’ve worked here for 10 years. They recently told us the pay for PA level work is fair (no increase coming from PC) you can be voluntold and you can’t opt out of it or else you’re out of a job. One associate said she didn’t pass a single exam in PA training but they have her the green light and hardly anyone knows what they’re doing. My manager has shown subtle racism over the years, HR doesn’t feel like a safe space and FLLs most definitely retaliate but in subtle ways like not reaching out to you to work on a project although you know you’re their go-to person for things like that. Or maybe they won’t “support” you when trying to get a promotion. Any way we can shake the table I’m for it. I’ll flip the table over at this point!

Yes to union. A lot of talk in my office. I think majority would be for it. At least with union they'd make the severance and time line more fair.

I would LOVE to be a part of a union at SF. I also know many others who are interested. I mentioned the idea to someone who has been around longer than myself (26yrs) and she said corporate SHUT IT DOWN in the years before me. Wonder what has changed in order for something like this to work?

I think the key to the OP's opening remarks was "Former... "

Didn't make the cut? Move on...

File EEOC complaints asap, if you are currently working at SF, or former employee who was mistreated (age discrimination, sick leave discrimination, hostile work environment) and terminated, etc. This will have more immediate impact. They quash anyone who hints at union or even getting together outside of work. It is a white collar sweatshop and needs a union and or federal intervention.

Agreed. Even IF unionization had a chance to benefit some individuals at the farm, the farm has been declining for years, and is now clearly - and irreversably - on it's way out. Any successful union effort would only hasten the demise. I don't know if abused workers would ever see relief via Union, or just shorter time on the job, but shorter time is guaranteed.

Unions don’t solve problems, they create them. A unionized workforce will only be the final nail in the coffin of a legacy insurance carrier that is struggling to adapt to the 21st century.

Our Agency Force is what needs to change. We need to sell a lot more direct and shrink our number of expensive agents.

This! "They tell you not to work overtime but know full well you have to work off the books in order to fulfill the obligations of your role."

It's what we've been screaming for 2-3 years, only to fall on deaf ears. So, everyone in my unit routinely works 10-12 hr days while reporting 38.45.

@TyCtTdF-1qss - you say ".... Save your OT money until you're able to find something else then quit. Do it while the economy is hiring." I believe you missed some of the point the OP was trying to communicate. If you can't report your OT, there is no OT to save. Unless you are one of the fortunate ones who is allowed to report your actual time worked.

OP gets it. There is a royal screwing over taking place on so many levels. I've opted out so I don't have a dog in the fight. But there needs to be an organized effort to put their moves in check.

Unionizing will not change anything. It will be another separate layer of bureaucracy and BS to contend with.

Unions also eat their young. Besides, SF is never going to be the same. It's a dinosaur in survival mode looking up at the Gieco and Progressive meteors.

Best advice I received? = Save your OT money until you're able to find something else then quit. Do it while the economy is hiring.

Arizona has a long and nasty history of union busting (the did it to Kroger)

Not likely a coincidence that so many jobs are moving to Phoenix.

I think there is an agents union and that may very well be the primary reason the company is bleeding red given that the union prevents the agency model from changing. The company responds by giving them awards and parties.

"free market"... what a load Barely hanging on. It's crony capitalism in play here in the good old US of A. Too big to fail, mandatory insurance, and now stoopid nativism and protectionism from the MAGAt-in-chief that'll cost consumers more. Get a clue.

We need a union. I have been there 29 years and screwed out of so many benefits because I'm not 50 years old but someone with less time with the company, like 5 years with the company gets the benefits because they are 50. Isn't that age descrimination. Where's the benefit of years of service and loyalty. Sooo screwed at this company. No way that's fair or legal.

Get a union in please. I think you'll be surprised at how many will sign up. Probably most everyone. It is very needed. If for nothing else - to make sure all areas get severence offers and not just screwed out of a job. It should at least be fair across the company. Hell yes to union.

Twenty something year employee here. Generally I’m against unions because they work against a free market, but there is nothing fair in this new model. There is only age discrimination, stress at being asked to do too much with too little, and creating a hostile work environment. I am shocked at the mindset of some people who post here. My salary is not “fat”- I have looked in the marketplace and feel I can go elsewhere for comparable pay and benefits. I would prefer to stay at the Farm and finish my career, but it is becoming unbearable. Do it now.

While there are laws to protect union organization and you're more than free to do so. I would politely tell you to shove it up your whatever. Also if i had the power i would terminate all union members and never sign any contract.

I think the majority of employees would sign up if you get the union in. We know whats coming and we have no protection or rights and are forced to work under terrible conditions. No time off etc. No flexibility. Points for an unavoidable emergency. Unable to get a day off for the birth of a grandchild. No available days for the rest of the year so no doctor apt. Not many docs schedule you a year in advance.
